There are a number of different alternatives to the traditional approach to home construction. Traditional materials used in home construction and traditional approaches to home construction tend to be wasteful and to harm the environment. If you want to improve the energy efficiency of your home and your home's construction materials, and if you also want to help reduce the impact on the earth and on the environment, then you should take a look at these alternative approaches to home building and house construction.

Most usually, when people talk about alternative home building, they are talking about what is known as green home building and construction. Alternative home building approaches deal with both the materials that are used in your homes and also the approach to the construction of your home. Both the construction process and the materials used can be changed from traditional approaches to construction in order to improve your energy efficiency and also to reduce your impact on the environment.

One popular building material that is used in alternative home building is what is known as structural insulated panels. Structural insulated panels are different from the traditional stick framing and insulation batting approach to framing homes. Instead, structural insulated panels have two panels that have a filling, with the entire thing welded together in a special way. Structural insulated panels can significantly improve your homes energy efficiency, and also don't use wood and reduce the amount of waste produced by batting insulation and stick framing.

Structural insulated panels can be used for any style of house and any size of house. Structural insulated panels can be combined with other energy efficient and environment aware approaches to home construction. These sorts of adaptations include the use of wind power, the inclusion of large windows and sky lights in order to maximize the use of natural light and solar power, and other alternative approaches to construction and also energy use in your home.

When you are building your alternative home, you should ensure that you only purchase appliances that are certified as energy efficient by Energy Star. You should also look for a contractor and a construction company that participates in the Energy Star program and follows the Energy Star steps that recommend approaches to energy efficiency. You can then request that your home be certified by Energy Star so that you can ensure that you are being energy efficient.

If you want to construct your own home using alternative home building methods, then it is highly recommended that you use structural insulated panels in your home construction. Structural insulated panels do not require a lot of skill in order to put them together for home construction; indeed, they are simpler to use than traditional stick framing and batting insulation. You can purchase the structural insulated panels from a company that specializes in them, and then construct your home. You can either purchase a home building kit, or you can find a company that customizes the sizes of their structural insulated panels so that you can use them in your own carefully and customized home.

Ensure that you are minimizing waste in the actual construction of your home. Provide a recycling container for your construction crew. Plant trees in strategic locations around your home to help provide shade in the summer so that you do not have to run the air conditioner. Also install a number of large windows so that you can have natural lighting in the summer and natural warmth in the winter.
