Alarm Systems

Alarm systems are very beneficial to your home and family. Burglary is one of the most commonly committed crimes in the United States. While most people purchase insurance to protect them from losses due to burglary and fires, another great option would be to purchase alarm systems to monitor and alert authorities on unauthorized entry and in cases of fire.

Think of it this way, while insurance is a great thing to have and having stolen items replaced with money is good, no insurance company can recover the losses you will feel if you have damaged or stolen files, pictures, and items of sentimental value. Insurance companies also cannot restore the time lost that you will spend in filing for a claim. It is because of this that alarm systems are as important, as insurance to one's home.

So, as you can see, buying an alarm system is important, but how do you know which to buy? Well, start by following these steps: Consider your needs, the house structure, its wiring system and other aspects of your household before deciding on what to install for your house.

Here are a few items to think about before going about buying one.

1. How many entrances are going to be integrated into the alarm system?

Go out and count the number of windows and doors in your house. For your alarm system to be effective, all windows and doors, even the smaller attic windows, should be connected to the alarm system. Obviously the more openings you have, the more costly and complex the system becomes. The number of entrances determines a number of things such as where you should put control centers to turn the alarm on or off.

2. Decide on the alarm system company to install the alarm system you want.

When you try to decide on an alarm system company you should first consult a security system specialist, an insurance agency, the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) or the police department for recommendations.

Whichever companies you check out should do a free survey and inspection. Then, make sure you ask for an explanation of the assessment and the price quote. Get it in writing so you can compare it with the contract you sign if you should choose to use their services.

For your alarm system, you do not have to pay someone to install it for you, you also have an option to buy a do-it-yourself alarm system. These systems are less expensive, but may not be as reliable as a system install by professionals.

3. Should you subscribe to monitoring station?

Some alarm companies provide 24-hour monitoring service that will alert them if the system has recorded a break-in. The monitoring company then alerts the local police. This form of alarm system requires a monthly fee.

4. Decide on the sensors location and sensitivity

If you have your sensor too delicate, you could be setting it off when you get up at night to get a drink or use the bathroom. Or, it could go off because of a pet. So, you need to assess your life and set your sensors accordingly.

If you have a motion sensor, make sure that this is installed in places high enough not be disturbed by pets. There are some motion sensors that can identify the size and the weight of the target, and thus are not set off by pets.

5. Assess the proper location for the control panel and keypads.

The best place to put a keypad is near the front door for ease in turning the alarm on/off when leaving the house or upon getting home. However, another keypad mounted near the bedrooms is a good idea, especially because it can act as a manual trigger, in case an entry was not detected by the alarm system, you can trigger it yourself.

6. Check the possibility of home automation.

There are burglar alarm systems that can also be connected to carbon monoxide and smoke sensors, flood detectors and the lighting system. This is a great option.

7. Type of controls

The controls should be easy to use. Every member of the household should be able to use and remember how to use the alarm system during emergency situations.
