Berber-Type Carpet

When it comes to the carpet for your home you cannot be too selective. There are several carpet varieties available, all of which offer different benefits as well as drawbacks. Berber-type carpet has become one of the most popular carpet styles over the past several years. Like other carpet styles there is a wide variation in product quality and performance characteristics, so do not make the mistake of thinking that just because it is a Berber carpet that it is going to be a great carpet.

Before 1985, most Berber type carpet was constructed of nylon fiber. Also, most Berber type carpet were subdued, beige tones. At this time berber was not a very popular carpet type, but today it is a very popular carpet choice. The increase in popularity of Berber type carpet probably started with the introduction of DuPont StainMaster in late 1986.

How would this make it more popular? Well, before StainMaster launched its campaign very few people would take the chance on buying a light colored carpet, because of the high risk of soiling and staining. No one wanted to replace their carpets every year because the light colors showed stains easily. So, when StainMaster launched, a transformation took place in the carpet industry.many consumers started buying lighter carpet shades (even white). Many people thought that because the carpet had StainMaster it would not get dirty. People did not seem to realize that it just meant that carpet cleaning would be easier. But, despite this misunderstanding, the popularity of Berber-type carpet rose. That popularity came in part because at the same time as the Stainmaster launch, olefin carpet production skyrocketed because a number of olefin extrusion plants came on line. Olefin (polypropylene) fiber capacity jumped considerably, and that created a line of Berber-type carpet.

Both nylon and olefin Berber type carpets have advantages. So, let's take a look at these:
Olefins resist all stains, with the exception of oil-based stains, but have the tendency to flatten or crush with time. Olefin Berber gets a bad rap, but it is not all bad. If you should choose an olefin Berber, make sure you understand carpet construction. Olefin cleans remarkably well, but fibers tend to gray due to soil abrasion. Olefin Berber is one of the best carpet values in terms of cost.

Nylon Berbers are much better quality Berber type carpets to buy. They have become harder to find due to the popularity of olefin, and are a bit pricey due to their scarcity, but Nylon Berbers are high quality. Nylon and wool Berbers are the best quality. New StainMaster fibers have made nylon Berbers easier to clean and stains are easier to remove, if immediate removal is attempted.

When choosing Berber-type carpet you want to make all the right choices, and if you do your carpet will last 15 or more years with normal use. So, what should you look for? Look for a high density construction with a crushing warranty (rare). Try to find something that is a 55 ounce, four-ply olefin (most are two-ply), or get a nylon or wool Berber, and regardless of the material, look for a carpet with a high density construction.

While durable, and very beautiful, many Berber type carpet styles are difficult to install, even for a professional. With most carpets, you can hide seams. With Berber-type carpet, seams are rarely invisible and pattern match can be tricky. So, if you are going to purchase Berber-type carpet, always order 10-15% extra for pattern match and insist on a six-inch seam iron to minimize seam peaking. Berber type carpet is an excellent carpet choice, and can be great for your homes, but you need to do so knowing what to get the best. A low quality Berber-type carpet your results will be poor. A high quality Berber-type carpet will have great results.
