Kitchen counter tops are probably one of the most used items in your home and can serve many different uses. Besides begin extremely useful they can also be an aesthetic element in your household. There are several different styles and materials to use when it comes to countertops. Choosing the best counter-top materials for your needs and making sure they fit into your budget is the most important thing to consider when choosing counter top materials. Let's take a look at some different materials you can use for countertops.

Formica Counter tops
Formica is a very popular counter top to put into a kitchen as they are extremely easy to clean and maintain. They are also easy to install and are even more affordable. Formica comes in a wide selection of colors which can be nice if you're trying to match colors of walls or linens with the counter top. They are cheap however and you may not mind the scratches and chips you get from young children.

Granite Counter tops
Granite is an extremely popular counter top choice today. They are more durable and even scratch resistant compared to a formica counter top, however be prepared to pay significantly more for granite than you would for formica. Granite is available in a variety of different edges; bull nose, blunt, knife edge. They are usually sold in slabs and can offer much more variety in terms of how it looks in the kitchen than you would be able to find with a Formica counter top.

Tile Counter tops
Tile is yet another option to use for your kitchen counter tops and has some good and bad qualities to it. It is laid almost exactly like you would lay a tile floor and can be arranged in any type of pattern or color scheme. It is obviously more time consuming to have it installed or to do on your own and can look dirty over time because of dirt that gets into the grout. Tile may not also be the best choice if you have children at home since dishes and anything glass tend to break easily if dropped on tile surfaces. Tile is not as expensive as granite but will cost you more than Formica counter tops will.

Corian Counter tops
Corian is another counter top choice that is almost as popular as granite these days. Corian (and similar solid plastic materials) is resistant to stains and bacterial growth so if you're living in a humid area corian might be a better choice than some of the other counter tops available just for the fact that bacteria will not grow. They are very low impact on air quality and you can grind stains and scratches out of the material. Many people love corian because the sink and counter top run together and there are no edges around the sink to collect dirt.

Adding new kitchen counter tops to your home is a great way to make the house look better and add value to your home. There are a wide variety of materials to use so finding the best counter top materials for your needs is what you need to think about most. Don't just go out and by granite because your neighbor likes it. Make sure it works for you.
