Remodeling or building a home can be a lengthy and overwhelming process. Trying to decide on countertops, carpet, and lighting are all part of the process. Trying to find the best materials for faucets is also another part of building and remodeling. Believe it or not there are several different things to consider when choosing faucets for your home. Let's take a look at some different considerations and what the best faucet materials are to use.

How to choose a faucet
Faucets come in all shapes and sizes so when choosing here are some things to consider:

  • Handles: You can choose a faucet that has one or two handles; this is a personal preference. However, you need to make sure that the faucet you choose will fit into the sink that you have. One handle faucets give you a convenient single handed control of water temperature and volume. Two handled faucets offer more styles and spout designs.

  • Style: Style is truly a personal choice but consider the size of your sink in comparison with the faucet. Don't go out and buy a big faucet when you have a small sink and vanity. Maybe you like the faucets that have long necks with a pull out spray, or maybe you want something simpler.
  • Scald protection: Some faucets today are built with what is called "scald protection." There are three different kinds, hot-limit safety stop faucets, pressure-balancing valve faucets, and thermostatic valve faucets. Hot limit safety stop faucets offer the user adjustable settings that restrict how far the handle can be pushed to hot. They come in extremely handy for homes with small children. Pressure balancing faucets protect you from drastic temperature changed. For example, when someone is washing clothes or running the dish washer at the same time as someone else having a shower. Thermostatic faucets allow you to select a favorite temperature on an easy to read dial. The valve responds automatically and will maintain the temperature even if the water supply changes.

Best Materials to use for Faucets
With a number of different styles and finishes it's important to find a faucet that meets your needs. When choosing a finish for a faucet you want to look for quality. Don't choose a cheap unit that may look good because it will likely not last as long. Let's take a look at some different faucet material finishes:

  • Brass was extremely common in the nineteenth century. It is a high maintenance finish and requires frequent polishing to keep it shiny. Brass is also more likely to tarnish over time.

  • Chrome became popular in the 1930's and is actually one of the more popular types of materials to use today. It looks sophisticated and will not tarnish over time. Chrome however does require frequent cleaning to keep it nice and shiny.

  • Nickel is also another material that has become more popular in the twentieth century. Nickel looks very similar to chrome and stainless steel like finished. It can have a polished or shiny finish. It is low maintenance and will hide scratches, fingerprints, and water spots.

These are some of the best materials for faucets that are being used today. Hopefully these helpful suggestions on how to choose a faucet and what are the most popular materials will come in handy on your search.
