Best ways to find a quality electrician

While not all home improvement projects require electrical work, a good portion will need a qualified electrician to finish the project. The reason using a certified electrician when doing a home improvement project is because of the high amount of danger associated with electrical work. Trying to rewire a kitchen or bathroom could prove lethal if done incorrectly. In this case, hiring a quality electrician is the key to safely finishing a home improvement project. Here are a few tips to consider when trying to find a quality electrician.
Ask Around
Sometimes the best place to find a quality electrician is through a friend or relative. If your friends, neighbors, or relatives recently had a home improvement project completed that required electrical work, ask them how they liked their electrician. If they had a positive experience, finding a quality electrician just became a simple task. Get the number and give the electrician a call.
Call Electrical Stores
Many electrical outlets that mostly sell products to electricians will know many different electricians that they could recommend. While this method is slightly more risky than finding an electrician through a friend or relative, electricians that come highly recommended will most likely be better than any random electrician. These stores will at the very least get the search rolling because if one electrician does not sound like a good match, that electrician should be able to recommend other electricians.
Phone Book
The last option is to start making calls to electricians listed in the phone book. This is probably the most risky way to find an electrician. Because the electrician is not coming already recommended, it is impossible to know just from an add in the yellow pages if the electrician will be a quality one or not.
Interview
Sometimes friends and neighbors do not know any quality electricians and a more risky method for finding an electrician must be undertaken. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, some extra steps must take place. One essential step is the interview. Call a few electricians and give them a mini interview. The idea is to get a feel for the electricians because they have not been referred. Here are a few things to ask when interviewing an electrician:
One question that is important to ask is if the electrician has any references that could give information about the work the particular electrician does. Another important bit of information to get is how much the entire project would cost. Ask the electrician what the average difference is between their bid and the final cost of the project. Another question to ask is how available they are to work. For example, if you have a project that needs to be done in a week, but the electrician hired is unavailable for two months, then the project will be on hold for a long time. This could mean living in a messy house for a lot longer than expected.
Finding a quality electrician can be a fairly large undertaking. If friends and family do not have a reference for a good electrician, chances are many phone calls will be needed to locate one that is available. Make sure to check out all of the local stores that sell electrical products mainly to electricians to see if they have any references of electricians they think are high quality. If that does not work, check out the phone book. Certainly there are electricians listed in there. No matter what, make sure to conduct a proper interview with multiple candidates to ensure that the best electrician is found to meet the needs of a particular project.
