Bathrooms are an absolute necessity in your house. But one of the problems with bathrooms generally is bringing light into the bathroom while maintaining the privacy that you want. The problem of bathroom lighting becomes even harder when you are trying to light a basement bathroom. Here are some tips to help you bring light to basement bathrooms and any other bathroom in your house.

Top 5 tips for bringing light to basement bathrooms

  1. Install a lot of lighting! When it comes to your entire basement, and especially when it comes to your bathroom, you should not skimp on the amount of lighting that you install. Install different types of lighting in your bathroom. If you have a larger bathroom, then you can highlight different areas of the bathroom with different types of lighting. You can use accent lighting to highlight the corners. Try a small lamp on a small side table with soaps and towels on it. Track lighting is another great idea that can bring a lot of light into your bathroom. Think about putting track lighting around the mirror. Another idea for lighting is to install water-proof lighting in the shower/bathtub area itself. This will bring light to an area that tends to be darker whenever you close the shower doors or the shower curtains. However, since most basement bathrooms tend to be on the dark side and you don't have the room to set up different areas of lighting, you need to be judicious in the lighting that you use. Install brighter light bulbs so that the light that you do have in your basement bathroom is even brighter.
  2. Think about windows.
Glass will bring an enormous amount of light into your bathroom. Even though your bathroom is in the kitchen, this doesn't mean that windows are off limits for your basement bathroom.
Consider installing a full-sized basement egress window in your basement bathroom. This will bring a lot of natural light into your bathroom, and will really open up the space of your basement bathroom. Having a full sized egress window in your basement bathroom will also be a great safety measure. A full sized window will be a great escape route in case there happens to be a fire in your house.
If you are worried about privacy, there are a number of different options that you can go with. You can put in nice curtains. There are also privacy blinds. You can also consider going with privacy glass that will let in light, but not too much view. One way glass is another idea.
  3. Not all windows have to let you look outside.
Creating light in your basement bathroom is not just about real light. You can also bring more light to your basement bathroom through using different illusions of light.
Interior windows create a great illusion of light in your basement bathroom. If there is a divider in your basement bathroom, you can put in a large pane of glass.
  4. The illusion of mirrors
Another way that you can create the illusion of light in your basement bathroom is through the use of mirrors. Mirrors reflect light and so you can double the power of your lighting. Mirrors also make your basement bathroom look even larger, which is a bonus because basement bathrooms tend to be on the small side.
  5. Use the right color of paint for your basement bathroom.
Make sure that the paint colors and the design colors that you choose for your basement bathroom don't suck all of the light out of your room. Choose lighter colors that reflect the lighting that you have in your bathroom. Choose whites or other lighter colors. Avoid dark colors that make the room seem even smaller.
