Building & home construction need-to-knows

Building a home can be one of the best things you ever do or one of the most painful things you ever do. It is extremely stressful and a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of time too. But there are things that you can do to make it a little easier that are things that you have to know about building your own home.
Firstly, you have to get the proper permits. Every city has a slightly different set of rules and regulations, so check with them to see what you have to do and what permits you need before you start. If you are hiring a contractor, they usually do it for you, but make sure. You don't want to have the city come in and tell you that you have to tear something down because you didn't get the right permit first.
Building a home takes a lot of time and energy, even if you never paint or nail in a floorboard. Make sure you know what you want and are prepared to make many different decisions while your home is being built.
Before you start building or even hire your contractor, you need to have a basic idea of what you want. You can cut pictures out of magazines, draw your own sketches, or just have a break down of what you want in each room and where you want the rooms. You will most likely have to have a professional design your home, unless you are an expert in that area. Make sure that you come to him with ideas first, and not have him guess at what you want. It will make the process a lot easier on everyone. Plus it will let your designer see exactly what you want.
When you design a home, make sure you know right off and at the end of the design how much each square foot is going to cost. Be sure that the price is clear from the beginning so you don't waste your time with someone who might charge more than you can pay.
While your home is being built, make sure that you are constantly talking with your contractor and builder. You want to make sure that you get what you told them and that the work they are doing is good work and that they aren't doing things sloppy just because there is a deadline they have to meet. Make sure you be firm about what you want and set guides. You aren't always allowed on the property while the home is being built, because sometimes technically it isn't your property yet, and so check to see if you can visit and check in with the work.
Building a home can take years even if it is being professionally built. It takes a long time to design the home and a long time to actually build it. Be patient with the contractor and builder. You want to make sure that while they are working and building your home that they are also building it to the best of their abilities. You don't want to spend a year waiting for your home only to find the craftsmanship isn't very good at all.
Make sure you take the time to sort out all the details and are willing to spend a lot of time with the builders. You want your investment to be worth it so patience is key. You also need to make sure that you stay involved and are there to make sure everything is going as planned. Be prepared for a huge task and a lot of time spent when you are building your home.
