Choosing light fixtures

Different types of light fixtures
For many people who may be remodeling a home for the first time, they may not realize just how many times of light fixtures there are. It is important for a person to be familiar with the different types of light fixtures when they are choosing their light fixtures.
There are four main types of light fixtures. These four categories are: task lighting, protective and safety lighting, decorative lighting, and general lighting. There are also different kinds of fixtures. For example, spotlights, track lights, chandeliers, fluorescent lights that are ceiling or wall mounted, and light fixtures that are under cabinets.
Decorative lighting fixtures are used to draw attention to a specific area of a room such as a picture or a fireplace mantel. Task lighting fixtures are used in rooms where only a few lights need to be turned on that focus on certain areas in the room, such as in the kitchen. Safety and protective lights are used in places like stairwells, to make the areas safer. And general lighting fixtures are used to light a rooms such as bathrooms and bed rooms.
What room and the mood
While there are many things that can help to create the appropriate mood in a home, light fixtures are one of the important ones. Choosing the right light fixture can help to create the feeling a person wants in their remodeled home. When someone is choosing their light fixtures, they need to think about what room they are putting them in and what mood they want that room to have.
Kitchen
The kitchen is one area that the family probably spends a lot of time in. A kitchen should have a lot of light. More light creates a happier mood. Plus the kitchen is an area that needs to be well lit because of safety reasons. Overhead, recessed lighting is great for a kitchen. And if there is an island a person can hang some fun little lights, such as pendant lights over it for a unique and fun look.
Dining room
When most people think of dining rooms they think of chandeliers. Chandeliers are a great idea for dining rooms. There are many different types of chandeliers available to match anyone's taste and person can add a dimmer switch so that there can be a different mood depending on the type of dinner.
Living room
The living room is like the kitchen, it is an area where people hang out a lot and so this room needs a lot of light. Recessed lighting is a great choice for living rooms because they have bright and natural light. Having a lot of light in the living room can help to create and maintain a cheerful mood. When a person is remodeling their home they could also add a dimmer switch to the lighting in the living room for movie nights.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms are also rooms that need a lot of light. Many types of light fixtures will work in most bedrooms. But depending on the height of the bedroom ceiling, a person should use a certain type of light bulb. If a bedroom has a pretty high or elevated ceiling they should use a halogen light bulb. If their bedroom has a lower ceiling they should use an incandescent bulb. Knowing the ceiling height in the bedroom and what type of light bulb should be used can help a person choose their lighting fixtures.
Bathrooms
A bathroom is an area where a person does some pretty detailed grooming. Because of this, putting a fluorescent light fixture in the bathroom is one of the biggest mistakes. Second to the fluorescent lighting mistake is not putting enough light in the bathroom. It is best to put one light fixture on each side of the mirror, or a long line of lights above the entire mirror. It is best that light fixtures that use halogen bulbs go in the bathroom because they show people with more natural colors so they appear more like they would in actual daylight.
Hallway
Incandescent bulbs are a great idea for well-used hallways. The length of the hallway can help a person decide on their light fixtures. If they have a shorter hallway then a person should use a flush or semi-blush mount light fixture. If they have a long hallway they could use wall sconce light fixtures.
Basements
Basements, especially underground basements, need light. Light fixtures are going to be the main source of light for basements so using halogen flood lights or high hats are great choices for basement light fixtures.
