Making the right choice when it comes to flooring is a big decision. With so many different options available to consumers it can be a task narrowing down the choices. Choosing the right carpet pile and color for your home is just one of the things you will have to decide when building or remodeling a home.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Where will you be using the carpet? The amount of traffic the carpet will get will depend on what type of carpet you want to lay. Children's rooms, hallways, and family rooms get the most wear and tear so choose something durable. Fiber content, pile weight, and style are also other considerations to keep in mind. We will talk more about pile later.

  2. What are the most logical colors? Carpet colors don't always have to be neutral; they just need to fit logically in with the rest of your home.

  3. Which fiber looks the best and will last the longest?

  4. Do you want plain carpet or something with a design or pattern?

  5. How easy will the carpet be to care for?

Choosing the right color of carpet for your home
Choosing carpet colors for your home can be a challenge indeed with such a wide variety of colors available. Finding a carpet color that compliments your home and your home furnishings is important and the carpet style can play a big role in how the carpet color is perceived. For example, a solid color on a textured carpet will look very different than on a regular conventional loop pile carpet.

Here are some other tips to keep in mind when considering carpet color choices:

  • Warm carpet colors will bring light into a room while cool greens and blues can have a calming effect. If you want to use light carpet colors they will make your room appear more spacious and using darker carpet colors will give you a smaller more cozy room.

  • If you are using carpet in some of your high traffic areas then you might want to consider using dark colors with patterns or textures. They tend to hide the dirt more than a lighter color would.

  • Furnishings can also play a big part in the color of carpet you decide to put in your home. If size isn't an issue then you can broaden your color choices to more than beige or dark colors. If your furniture is dark then you probably don't want to choose a dark carpet color and vice versa. Too much of a dark color will make your room stuffy and small. Before you go looking keep in mind the colors in your furniture.

  • Lighting can also affect the way a carpet color appears. Most carpet stores will have special lighting which is neutral tone that will help you see the true color of the carpet.

Carpet Pile
All carpet types start out as a loop pile and during the manufacturing process the loops are cut creating various textures and patterns of the cut pile. There are three types of carpet to consider:
  1. Cut pile

  2. Loop pile

  3. Cut and loop pile

There are a few different types of cut pile carpets out there to choose from:

  • Plush: Plush pile carpet is soft, velvety in terms of the look and feel. It has a rich texture and can look beautiful in an elegant room used with formal décor.

  • Saxony: This type of cut pile is created by twisting two or more piles together, then heating it so the tip of each carpet becomes evident on the surface. They are popular in a traditional or formal setting or room.

  • Frieze: This cut pile carpet is constructed with highly twisted fibers that can result in excellent durability for high traffic areas. The fibers are short and curl in different directions which helps to hide footprints and vacuum marks. It has been called the "trackless" carpet. They are extremely popular and resilient.

Choosing the right carpet pile and color for your home doesn't have to be a major headache. It will however require some research on your part and some consideration of where it will go and what you want your room to look like.
