There are a lot of things that a person has to take into consideration when they are choosing their countertops during a home remodel. Usually a person wants countertops that will be stain-resistant, easy to clean, durable, and stylish. Picking out countertops that meet all of these criteria can seem a little overwhelming. This article offers information about choosing countertops to help make the process a little easier.

What room

When a person is picking out countertops for their home remodel, they are generally choosing countertops for their kitchen or their bathroom. Though the materials and colors of countertops can usually be used in either room, the person choosing the countertops will probably make a decision based on the room it is going in; the kitchen or the bathroom. The room, the amount of use it gets, and the decor can help them decide on both the type of material and the color of the countertop.

Materials

There are several different types of materials that are used to make countertops. Each countertop material has pros and cons. It can be helpful to know about the different materials when a person is choosing their countertops for their home remodel.

Plastic laminate

Plastic laminate is one of the least expensive materials used for countertops. It is very durable and it is also available in many different style options and colors. Usually a person can install the plastic laminate countertops themselves which can make it even less expensive for a person to choose this material for their countertops. However, plastic laminate does not tolerate direct heat, its color can fade, and the edges and seams are noticeable.

Solid surface

If a person chooses a solid surface for their countertops they get countertops that have no noticeable seams as well as a surface that is smooth and very durable. Solid surface countertops allow scratches to be sanded out and they are water and heat resistant. The problems with solid surface countertops are that they have very limited color options and can be quite pricey.

Natural quartz

Natural quartz countertops are pretty expensive compared to other materials, and sometimes they may have visible seams. But natural quartz countertops also are resistant to scratching, stains, bacteria, and heat. And this type of countertop does not require very much maintenance while remaining very durable.

Stone

Stone countertops are very expensive but they have a great texture. Not only do stone countertops look fabulous, they are also very durable, and they are water and heat resistant. Besides the price tag, one of the biggest negative aspects of stone counter tops is that scratches are hard to remove.

Ceramic tile

Ceramic tile can be a great choice for countertops. This material is durable and heat resistance, it can be installed easily by the home owner, and ceramic tile comes in many different colors and designs. There are a few problems with ceramic tile. For example, it can chip or crack, it leaves the countertop uneven, and the grout that holds the tile together can be really hard to clean.

Color

Sometimes the color of the countertop can be harder to choose than the type of material the countertop is made of. A person will want to consider the décor of the room as well as their future plans for the room during the home remodel. It is important that the color of the countertop goes well with the room. Choosing a neutral color for the countertop can help the countertop be enjoyed by the home owners for years. But sometimes being bold and making a more daring choice can turn out to be a great idea and make the countertop a fun addition to the home remodel.
