Choosing your flooring

When a person is doing a home remodel, a very important part of the remodel should be the choice of flooring. Choosing the right flooring for a home can be a big job. This article discusses choosing your flooring for your home remodel to make the task a little bit easier.

Things to consider

When a person is choosing flooring for their home remodel, they need to think about a few things before making the final decision. A person should consider the wear and tear that will be put on the flooring in specific rooms, the noise it might make, how well the flooring goes with the rest of the room, the cost of the flooring, and safety.

Wear and tear

There are certain rooms in houses that get more traffic than other rooms. This should definitely be considered when a person is choosing flooring during their home remodel. In rooms, entryways, or hallways where people walk around a lot they should probably choose flooring made from more durable materials. In places or rooms where there is less traffic, a person can use a less durable material for their flooring.

Noise

Flooring choices such as wood or tile will create more noise than a carpeted floor. If a person has children or pets, they may want to take into consideration the amount of noise that may be generated from their choice of flooring.

Décor

Another importing thing to consider when a person is choosing flooring is if it matches with the rest of the décor of the house. If a person is doing a complete home remodel, they will be starting with more of a blank canvas and may have more flooring options to choose from. But if they are not doing a whole home remodel, they should take the current wall color, countertops, furniture, etc., into consideration.

Cost

Cost will likely be a huge factor for a person when they are choosing flooring. A person doing a home remodel will usually like the highest quality of flooring they can get, but probably does not want to spend a lot of money. Usually higher quality flooring costs more so a person needs to decide how much they can spend and this can help them choose their flooring.

Maintenance

When a person is choosing flooring they should think about the maintenance and upkeep that a particular type of flooring requires. They should think about kids and pets and the messes that they make. They should also think about which rooms tend to be used more often which may make the flooring dirtier.

Instillation

Some types of flooring allow people to install them themselves, while others require professional instillation. Usually flooring looks better and can even last longer if installed by a professional.

Rooms

Certain rooms require specific things from their flooring. In the bathroom it is important to have waterproof flooring for any overflows that may occur and non-slip flooring is good for safety purposes. Great choices for bathroom floors are ceramic tile, vinyl, and laminate wood products.

A kitchen is a room that has a lot of traffic and requires flooring that can accommodate this. A kitchen floor will likely experience a lot of spills as well so vinyl, tile, or wood are great options for kitchen flooring.

Bedrooms have less traffic and so there usually won't be a lot of wear or stains. Many people choose carpet in bedrooms, but laminate or wood flooring can also be used.

Stairs and hallways are very high traffic areas in the house so there will likely be a lot of wear and possibly a lot of stains in this flooring. Laminate flooring or ceramic tile can be a great option for these areas.

Dining rooms usually require stain-resistant flooring, and if the dining room is used for mealtimes regularly then getting a type of wear-resistant flooring is also a good idea. Usually tile, laminate, or wood flooring work well in dining rooms.

Living rooms, though well-used, are great areas for carpet. Carpet flooring can make a living room a very comfortable place. But if a person chooses to use wood for the flooring in their living room, they can always place area rugs to create a more comfortable feeling.

Going green

There are some great choices for green flooring. If a person wants to choose environmentally friendly flooring they could use bamboo, reclaimed wood, or carpet that is made completely from natural raw materials. There resources are renewable or recycled which is much healthier for the environment and many times for the people that live in the house too.
