Paint projects can be one of two things: a stressful bad experience, or a fun opportunity to make your house look and feel like new. When it comes to paint projects, choosing colors can be one of the most difficult aspects. In fact, most people who undertake a painting project worry they are not going to like the colors they have selected once they are applied to the walls. To not fit in this category, or in other words, to like your paint before, during and after the project you need to understand the color system some, and how you can use it to your advantage.

Understanding color systems and a few simple terms relating to color can help you make better color decisions, and ones that you will not ever regret.

The following are some simple color concepts that anyone looking to paint should know:

  • Primary colors are the pigment colors that all of the other colors are made from. The primary colors are blue, red, and yellow.
  • Secondary colors are two primary colors mixed together.
  • Tertiary colors are a primary color and a secondary color mixed together.
  • Color Families are groups of colors that are made from the same colors.
  • Neutral Colors are gray, white, and black, which contain no other identifiable colors.
  • Monochromatic colors on the wheel are one basic color (hue), but have different values (lightness (tints) or darkness (shades)).
  • Adjacent colors combine two or more colors located next to each other.
  • Complementary colors are opposite each other. When painting your house you will want to use a subtle color and a dominate color to avoid clashing.
  • Triad colors are three colors that are used together, with one being the dominant color and the others being accent colors.

If you are going to paint your house it would be wise to get your hands on a color wheel, and use it as your guide to painting, with the above concepts acting as your compass. Using the color wheel and mixing various colors together can be a good starting point. Another great place to start when selecting colors for the interior of your house it to use colors from fabrics that may already exist in furniture and window treatments, or colors in a painting or other décor item you want to use in the room. You can get ideas for exterior colors from the colors in roofing shingles, and brick.

After you decide on a color, it's always best to buy a small amount of paint and try it out to see if you like it as much as you thought you would. Be sure that of your choice that it is the most desirable, no matter how many colors are being considered. The small color chips you look at in the store, and take home with you can sometimes be difficult to judge. So, maybe buy a small quart container of the paint you pick, and paint a sample portion of your wall to be certain you like it after all is said and done and the paint is dry.

Also, it is important to note that when it comes to colors, the shades, tones, and hues can make a difference in the house's overall appearance. For example, light colors make a room, or the exterior of a house, appear larger while dark colors will have the opposite effect. Also, when you are picking out paint samples, make sure to examine the colors in all aspects. Meaning, night, day, shaded, etc. Lighting, and especially direct sunlight, will affect color. Some other important facts you might want to consider when selecting colors are that darker or more dramatic colored paints contain less titanium and may take multiple coats to cover. If applied incorrectly, hatbanding will appear. Darker colors are extremely difficult to touch up, and like sheen finishes will show touchup marks.
Use this information to help yourself pick the best colors, that compliment eachother, go well together, and give your room the desired effect.
