Common problems and solutions encountered when switching out light fixtures

Lighting is very important in any household and is even more important during the winter or rainy season when there is less natural light and when the lights go out. Having lights out of commission can be a very serious problem and in many cases will require you to do some electrical work.
It may seem like a no brainer, but most problems with lights happen when there is some kind of interruption from the light fixture to the power source. The most common problems can occur with the wiring, the connection to the fixture or even the connection to the switch. If you aren't comfortable working with wiring or electrical components, then it's probably a good idea to hire an electrician or work with someone who is more comfortable working with electricity.
Unfortunately, whenever there is a problem with a light not working, most people assume that it is a problem with the light fixture and not with the other components in the system. Many people replace the light only to learn that the new one doesn't work either and then they have to spend even more time and money trying to locate and fix the problem. It may be difficult to check the switch, but if you can, this is always the best option before you assume that the light is no good.
Remember, that before you do anything with the wiring, even check to make sure it's a problem with the wiring, always shut off the power and make sure that you are following proper safety procedures. It is best to shut the power off at the service panel, which is probably located in the basement or crawl space of the home.
One of the most common problems with home electrical work is not knowing where they problem is located and perhaps the best way to find out is with a simple set of circuit testers. These are normally quite inexpensive and can be found at most hardware stores and even big box stores. These will help you to tell if a circuit is actually passing the electricity or if there is some kind of break in the circuit. Finding the problem with the circuit is often found by narrowing things down and really pinpointing where the problem is.
Once you've confirmed that the circuit is still connecting, you need to connect the new light fixture. The most common problem that people encounter is not remembering where they original wires were and which one should connect to which part in the fixture. Don't count on your memory to be reliable for this and mark the wires instead. Perhaps the best way to mark them is to just write on a small piece of making tape that is then attached to the wire. This can save a lot of trouble and guessing later on as to what the problem may be if it still doesn't work.
When you have installed the new fixture, turn the power back on and make sure that it works. If there is still a problem with the fixture, many people may jump to the conclusion that there is still a problem or that there is something wrong with the work they have done. Don't always jump to conclusions and try to think about it logically and make sure you thing through everything thoroughly. You will often find that the problem is something small or not as big of a deal as you thought it would have been. If you still can't think of any possibility of what the problem could be, it may be time to call an electrician who can diagnose the problem and make sure it isn't something more dangerous or more costly to repair.
