Creating a portfolio of likes and dislikes so you can build you dream house, no regrets
Building your dream home can be an exciting yet stressful time in your life. To make things a little less stressful you might want to think about creating a portfolio of likes and dislikes so you can build your dream house with no regrets. The portfolio itself may take you some extra effort and time, but it will definitely be worth it in the end. Besides your dislikes and dislikes, there are some other things you will want to have in your portfolio. Here are some helpful tips on creating a portfolio for your dream home.
1. The Big Picture
As you begin to put your portfolio together, the first thing you want to ask yourself as you picture your dream home is what do you see? And more importantly what does your partner see? You may have some different ideas on what your dream home is so you need to make sure you are both on the same page. Sit down and make a list of what you want, and what your partner wants. That way you can give and take on some things and make your way to the same page. Some things you will want to discuss are:
How big will your dream home be?
How many bedrooms/ bathrooms will your dream home have?
What style will your dream home be? Some styles are contemporary, traditional, modern, etc.
This first part of your portfolio should be all the basics of your home. Be honest with what you like and dislike so you and your partner are on the same page.
2. Designing your Dream home
Believe it or not, you don't necessarily have to hire an architect to build your dream home. You might be surprised at how many websites and software packages will give you ideas on how to design your dream home. Websites such as www.buildyourdreamhouse.com and www.design-house.com are both places you can go to design your very own dream home. Some websites will sell their designs, and others will allow you to design the entire thing on your own. From the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, to the size of garage you want. You have many different options. There are other websites such as www.homeplans.com that will give you a number of different links to help you find websites to help you design your dream home. You can also find many different software packages to help you design your dream home. Most software packages will give you 3D viewing features with color options and applications, landscaping options, and many other planning tools. You truly can create the house of your dreams with these. They will also give you lighting options, and additional templates for room designs.
3. Building your Dream home
This will be the last part of your portfolio. Now that you have worked out your likes and dislikes about how big or small you want the house to be, colors, number of rooms, etc. you will begin with the building portion of the portfolio. Unless you are a builder, this is where you will need to find some extra help. You will need to hire either an architect or a general contractor that has a lot of experience and of course someone who is reputable in the community. References are extremely important during this phase. As you continue to build your portfolio be sure and write down names and phone numbers of different people. Talk with friends and family and get suggestions from them. When you talk with potential contractors, be sure to ask for their profiles and past work plans. If they are a good company and have done good work they will be happy to show you pictures and give you as many references as you ask for. Once you find someone you like, sit down and go over your portfolio with them. They will need to know what your likes and dislikes are as well so they can build the home to your specifications.
As you continue to build your portfolio you can go back to it over and over so you will have no regrets on what you are building and planning.
