Cutting costs not quality during a remodel

Doing a home remodel can be an exciting time for a homeowner. It can also be a very expensive undertaking. However, not all home remodels need to break the bank. It is possible for a homeowner to achieve the quality they are looking for in a remodel, while staying within budget. Here are a few tips for cutting costs not quality during a home remodel.

Avoid Reconstruction

Most of the time, the purpose of doing a home remodel is to modernize a room or part of the house. The best way to do this without spending too much money is to avoid having to build any new walls, move appliance outlets (like the stove or refrigerator), and keep the plumbing where it is. Paying a contractor to move or extend a gas line or to reroute the plumbing can get expensive quickly because the process will include breaking into the walls and then rebuilding the walls. If a change to appliances is a must, it might be better to simply update the actual appliance than to move and existing one.

Wholesale

Another great way to maintain quality while cutting costs during a home remodel is to purchase items from a wholesaler. Appliances, cabinets, tiles, countertops, and light fixtures can all be purchased at a discount if a homeowner were to just take a little time to research. Also, if a homeowner has decided to do a lot of the work by themselves, plumbing, wiring, and building supplies can also be purchased at a discount if the homeowner just took a little time to locate these places.

Do It Yourself

Many local hardware stores will give you step-by-step instructions on how to complete a home remodel project without ever having to find a contractor. Because contractors charge for materials and labor, a homeowner can save lots of money simply by cutting out labor costs and doing the work themselves. This is also an opportunity for the homeowner to make the remodel look exactly how they want it to maintain quality. Also, instructions on how to do many home remodel projects can be found via the internet or the local library.

Reuse

Many times homeowners make the mistake of assuming that in order to have a new looking room, they must put all new items in the room. This is not true. For example, it might seem like replacing a light fixture is a must in order to complete a room, but in reality simple applying a new coat of paint that matches the color scheme of the new room will make the fixture and the room look like new. This can be done with furniture also. A kitchen table does not necessarily need to be replaced because it is the wrong color. Refurbishing the table can make it look like new, but will cost a fraction of the price of purchasing a brand new table.

No matter what type of home remodeling project a homeowner has decided to undertake, there are many ways to maintain quality while cutting costs. Homeowners should consider avoiding reconstruction, visiting a wholesaler, doing some work themselves, and reusing old appliances in order to cut on remodel costs. With the economy in a rut, it is good to know that a homeowner can still create the remodel they have always wanted without spending inordinate amounts of money.
