Dealing with liability issues during a remodel

When people are remodeling a home, they often do not think about the liability issues that can happen during the remodeling process. However, liability is an important thing to consider when you are doing a remodel. Liability is an type of obligation which binds a person or a company to settle the debt of another person or company. Liability insurance is very important because it helps to compensate any third party which experiences damages or loss - in other words, if the contractor ruins something in your kitchen while remodeling, then his liability insurance will be able to cover your loss. Liability insurance is very important because it helps you to know that you will not be literally paying for any mistakes that the contractor might make. Here are some things that you should know about dealing with liability issues during a remodel:

Liability insurance: You should always, always, always make sure that your contactor has liability insurance before he or she begins work on your home! You should check the documentation of your contractor's liability insurance as well, and not just simply take his word for it. Write down the policy number and call his insurance company to make sure that your contractor really does have insurance. It's better to be safe than sorry! If your contractor does not have liability insurance, then you might want to find another contractor. Another thing that you can do is see if the liability portion of your homeowner's policy can be extended to include your contractor and his work in your home.

Look on the liability portion of your homeowner's policy: Another thing that you will want to do is be aware of the liability portion of your homeowner's policy. See what the limits are for your liability portion - you will want to make sure that any of your remodeling endeavors are covered under your homeowner's policy. And again, if your contractor is not fully covered under your liability insurance, then you should see if you can extend some of the limits of your liability insurance under your homeowner's policy to help you cover him or her.
Inexpensive riders: There are also inexpensive riders that contractors can purchase to help cover the liability of a remodeling project. You can ask your contractor to look into inexpensive riders if his insurance and your insurance do not immediately cover all of your remodeling projects.
Make sure that your contractor is also licensed for the type of work that you want done: Another thing that can mess up liability issues is if your contractor is not licensed for the type of work that you want done. If that is the case, then your contractor will not be able to get the right types of permits that he needs, etc., which possibly could interfere with liability issues. So, just to make sure that your contractor has all of the licensing necessary, so there could not be any possibility of problems with liability in the future!

Another thing that you should know is that your even if your contractor does have liability insurance, it doesn't necessarily mean that he is a good contractor. It only means that the contractor is insured - the insurance company will not vouch for the work that your contractor does! If you have any further questions about liability during the remodel of your home, you should ask your homeowner's insurance company or a legal representative that works with liability issues as well. Good luck dealing with liability issues during a remodel - hopefully you won't need to deal with liability issues at all!
