Decorating the Kitchen

Decorating the kitchen is a fun, cheap way to spruce up a home. Whether it's a newly remodeled kitchen ready to be personalized or an old kitchen that needs a little TLC, décor is a great form of self expression in the home.
Paint
Or even wallpaper! The seventies staple is back in style again, and there are so many patterns to choose from it's easy to find something to love. But if in decorating your kitchen traditional paint is the preference, there are thousands of options to choose from. Paint styles can vary from the popular pastel yellow (it gives a sunny, relaxing feel to an eating space) to adventurous colors, including periwinkles, lime greens, and corals. The general tip is to use no more than three colors when painting, as more can be a bit intense. Of course, the best thing to remember is to paint it exactly the way you want it to be. It is wise, however, to remember that if in the future you should choose to sell, you don't want the flamingo pink kitchen to influence a potential buyer's decision!
Cabinets
Cabinets are to a kitchen what sofas are to a living room. They make or break the room. It's important to choose cabinets that match the paint, although contrasts can sometimes work as well. If, for example, you have painted the kitchen a light pink color, choosing cabinets that are a lighter colored wood is wise. However, some designers have chosen to do the opposite, with dark cherry walls and pure white cabinets! It's dramatic, but it works. The material of the cabinets does not have to match the material of the countertops, but the colors should complement each other.
Also practicality is important. Could the dishes be stored near the dishwasher? Is there room for a microwave? A kitchen should be pleasing to look at, but it's more important to be functional.
Furniture and Appliances
There is not a lot of room in most kitchens for furniture, although the island is a popular choice. Kitchen islands are useful because they provide extra work space for slicing and dicing, extra storage space for utensils and appliances, and they can also break up the space that is sometimes too wide between counters.
Select which appliances should be visible. It is a current trend to hide microwaves behind specifically designed cabinet doors that blend in with the rest of the cabinets. Is there a certain brightly colored blender that would just set off the color of the countertops? Buying appliances in complementary colors with the paint and countertops is like accessorizing an outfit; get just the right colors, and you'll get just the right effect. But just as too much jewelry can destroy an outfit, it is a good idea to keep visible appliances to a minimum. "Cluttered" is never an adjective you want for your kitchen.
Floors
For those who wish to take their kitchen decoration all the way, choosing a floor can be one of the most satisfying aspects of redecoration. Wood or tile? Linoleum? Rugs? There are so many options. It is a good idea to have something that cleans easily; if you prefer rugs, make sure they can be picked up and shaken outside without too much trouble. Wood requires some maintenance, such as the occasional varnish. It also doesn't allow for very much mopping, so if there are kids in the home, it might not be a good idea. However, it can add a beautiful and classic touch to a home.
Linoleum is the preferred flooring for a kitchen, and with good reason. It cleans easily, is fairly inexpensive compared with wood and tile, and it comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns. The floor is a good way to sneak some style into your kitchen. If you've chosen classic colors and more traditional paint, choose a matching floor with an exciting pattern. If you've chosen to do a very bright kitchen, choose a simple linoleum that will allow your painting to do the talking.
Whatever the decision, in the end the most important thing is that the kitchen suit you! Make your kitchen decoration an expression of yourself, and you will never regret what you have created. Have fun!
