If you are building an average square foot home you are not going to want to make your bedrooms really big and have a small kitchen and family room because of it. You want to make sure that everything is well portioned so that your other rooms are not smaller than average.

Tips for building a "green" home

Making a home that is friendly to the environment is not an easy task. As Kermit the Frog said once, "It's not easy being green." Creating a "green" home for your family is one way to show them the importance being aware of the effect we have on our surroundings. Here are some tips for building a "green" home.

If you are building a home from scratch, try building the house from recycled materials, such as plywood made from scrap wood and insulation made of plastics developed from plants. Even seeking alternative designs can help make a house more environmentally friendly. People are still building homes that are insulated with hay. This may seem a little backward; hay and straw actually can keep a house warm, if not warmer, than traditional insulating products. Another way to build a home that keeps at a nice constant temperature is underground houses. The basic design is exactly how it sounds, underground. What you do is dig a large hole in the ground that is as large as the perimeter of your house. Lay the foundation in the ground and then build. The earth acts as a natural insulator. It keeps the house cold in the summer and warm in the winter. This may sound like a silly solution, but it has been done quite a bit and there are professional opinions that have been published concerning these homes.

It can seem like a lot of trouble to learn all of the standard dimensional specifications, but think of it this way, if you know the exact number of inches there must be between the wall and the furnace, then you can make your plans with enough space, rather than try and create the needed space after you started building. That makes sense! You don't want to find out you did it wrong, you want to know how to do it so you can simply do it right.

So, this may be a tree you would like to plant if you are planning to live in the home for a long time. Other trees look beautiful right away, and this is the type of tree you should plant if you intend to sell after a few years. Mulch vs Stone

Mulch obviously comes in organic and inorganic materials. When people think of mulch they generally think of the organic materials such as the wood chips, etc. Most do not think that a stone mulch would give many benefits. If you are tired of replacing that worn out old mulch, then take your landscaping to the next level with hassle-free home improvements such as stone mulching!

So, for the question of which is better, mulching with rocks or with an organic mulch like bark chips, let's look at the answer, and compare mulch vs stone. Both will help maintain soil moisture, reduce soil temperature and reduce weeds. However, organic mulch breaks down over time and releases nutrients into the soil, while rock mulch does nothing to improve the soil, but has other benefits. You might consider an organic mulch for around the plants, and stone along the paths, or you may want to evaluate your lifestyle and determine which is best for you and your property.
