Do I need a contractor?
There are a lot of different building projects that you might experience in your life. You might build a house, add on an addition, or even remodel an old house. No matter what the project is you will want to make sure that you have all the tools necessary to know what exactly needs t be done. If you are thinking about starting a project but are asking yourself the question do I need a contractor, here is some information that might be able to help you out.
The first project tat you might do is remodeling. Depending on what you are remodeling will depend on if you need a contractor or not. For example if you are just finishing off a room in the basement of your house you can probably just hire some one to come in and frame it up and then have the insulation brought in and then hire some one else to do the drywall and mud and taping. You can then choose to paint yourself or hire some one to do this as well. You can pretty much do the same for any part of your house that you want to remodel. Remodeling isn't usually a big deal and you should be able to handle it with out having to hire a contractor.
The second project is an addition. An addition might take more time and effort to get everything lined up and going. If you are going be needing excavation and a foundation you can contract this yourself but there might be a lot of things that you don't know need to be done and there might be things that you don't even know who to contact them for. If this is the case you might want to think about hiring a contractor to come in and help get the project done. If you think that you have the general idea of what needs to happen and what order it needs to be done in you can contract it yourself and then ask questions if needed.
The third project is building a home. Building a home is a huge project that a lot of people do not want to tackle on their own. For this reason a lot of people hire a contractor. The reason why it is easier to hire a contractor is because usually they have certain sub contractors that they use and work with all the time so you don't have to worry about lining anybody up and can just be in charge of picking out what you want and giving input where needed. Usually when you have a contractor they usually carry the construction loan as well as have to deal with doing all the draws and then you just have to get the final financing when it is complete. The good thing about this is if the contractor takes longer to build then promised they have to pay the extension fees for the loan usually where as if you are the contractor and fall behind you have to worry about the extension fees.
These are just a few of the projects that you have to ask yourself the question do I need a contractor. There are a lot of other projects out there that you might have to ask the same questions about but these are usually the main ones that you will deal with. Make sure that if you decide that you do need a contractor that you shop around get bids and ask for references so that you know that you are getting a good contractor.
