Exterior Lighting

Exterior lighting is important, it makes your home safer and more secure by providing necessary illumination for walkways, steps and entrances, and it makes outside spaces usable even after the sun has gone down. Both of these features are important, but let's first talk about safety.

Exterior lighting and safety go hand in hand. There are several exterior lighting options that can help make your home safer. Lighting with timers and photo cells provide a lived-in look while you're away from home and ensure the area around the house is well-lit when you arrive home after dark, which is very important.
The most common type of exterior lighting fixture is a brass wall lantern. Materials such as cast aluminum are also great options because they are rust-resistant.

How much exterior lighting should you have? A light mounted to one side of every exterior door is the minimum exterior lighting needed. A better, safer option is having a lantern or other wall fixture on both sides of the door and a pendant or a post light near driveways and walkways. For the most complete protection, mount your lights so that the coverage areas overlap.

The following are some safety tips that should be considered when choosing your exterior lighting:

1. Always light up steps, driveways, walkways and yards with floodlighting. This will help you when it comes to liability, but it also makes you feel more comfortable in your own yard.

2. Always turn off the power before servicing your light fixtures. You do not want to risk shocking or electrocuting yourself.

3. Read all instruction manuals carefully before attempting installation of any light fixture. You want to ensure you install them properly so that warranties will be good, and your safety will be ensured.

4. Choose a motion detector light with a sensor that best suits your needs. A sensor with a broad range of coverage would be better suited to a yard than to an entrance. Sensors are made for every situation, so pick the right one for your exterior lighting needs.

5. Using motion-activated lighting will ensure that front and rear entrances to your home are secure. Motion lights will welcome guests and startle intruders. They also allow you to leave your light on so that you have the proper lighting, but not pay high electric bills.

6. Choose a motion light with an indoor alarm module so that you know what's going on outside. This will be beneficial, but it could be problematic if the sensor is triggered too easily.

7. Because heat from light bulbs can cause false triggering, be sure not to position them too close to the motion detector. Trees, swimming pools and other reflective surfaces can also cause false triggering. The last thing you want is a flashing light because the sensor is triggered too easily, but you want the security of sensors.

Safety is important, but outside lights are also a great way to extend your living space. By adding enough lights outside, you can spend time out of doors without worrying about breaking your ankle because you can't see. You can play games, have barbecues and parties, or just relax in the cool evening air with a good book. Without good exterior lighting this is not possible.

There are several exterior lighting fixtures to choose from, so finding some for your home should not be a problem. Just remember to get ones that can withstand the weather and that are rust resistant. This will extend the life of the fixtures, and provide safety. You could even consider using energy efficient light bulbs to reduce your energy bills.
