Home building budget software

One of the first things you need when building a new home is a budget. Before you are allowed to get a building loan or receive a building permit, you must have a budget ready. If you have hired a contractor, they can sit down with you and create a budget. Many people who are building their homes themselves will need to find an alternative method. There is home building software available that can help you do this.

For starters, the internet is always the way to go. You can find free calculators on the internet that can help you determine the cost of your home. It will be a ballpark figure based on the size of your house, the area, and the cost of building materials. This will not work if you need to draw up budget for a loan or building permit.

Shop online stores like eBay or Amazon.com, both stores have a large variety of low cost home building software. Another good thing about these stores is they offer customer comments and reviews of the actual product. You can find out a lot about the software from the product descriptions and the customer comments. This is a great place to start researching for different types of home building software.

Of course since there are so many programs available, it may be hard to know which program is best for you.

Here are a few tips for narrowing down your choice:

  • Talk with other home builders or contractors. They can refer a particular type of software and inform you of what software is commonly used in the construction field.

  • If you are not computer savvy, find a program that is user-friendly. Many companies will provide you with free downloads of the software that you can try. This is a great way to evaluate if the software will work for you. If you find a program that can be downloaded, avoid any program that has the word "shareware". This type of software is not safe for you and your computer; if you download it you are putting your identity at risk.

  • Go to a construction supply store and look at the different software options available. A sales associate should be able to give you some advice about home budgeting software as well.

  • Read the packages of all the software carefully. If you don't like the format or something else about the software, decide now, before you open it.

Let's look at a few of the home building software programs on the market to help you make your decision:

Resi-Cost Software (by Home-Cost.com)
This software is available online; there is no need to download it. It provides the user with the ability to determine certain costs of their home and plan for "what-if" scenarios. You control the size of your home, the ceiling heights, material quality, etc. You are able to modify most selections to see the impact it will have on your building budget. Resi-Cost does have a proven track record of providing sufficient detail for home budgets to be used for a bank loan.

Building-cost.net
This online calculator allows you to input specific information about your home, to provide you with an estimated cost of construction. The calculation tool takes about 5 minutes to walk through. You can even purchase software for $29.75 from their website called "2008 National Building Cost Estimator". This software will provide you with a budget, based on your building information and the National building cost estimates.

There are several other home building budget software programs available, find one that fits your needs and your budget.
