Home Intercom
Anyone with a large home, a large family, or just a desire, can benefit from a home intercom. They are handy, and fun to have. They can make your home more enjoyable and comfortable, and can be inexpensive.
What is a home intercom, and why would you want one? An intercom is an electronic communication system that is commonly found in hospitals, schools, offices and other large buildings, in ships and liners, and especially for this purpose, in homes. With just a push of a button, an intercom system enables people in different rooms to communicate with each other in an instant. This is very convenient, no more yelling up the stairs and hoping your children can here you, simply push the button and speak in a regular tone.
The intercom is now becoming a popular component of every household, so when building, remodeling, or upgrading your home keep in mind that the right knowledge and proper caution is important, but an intercom will be a great addition. The following are guidelines that will help you in finding the perfect home intercom to best suits your needs.
1. Set your budget. The first, and most important thing to do before shopping for a home intercom system is to set your budget limit. There is no sense looking into brands, makes and features you will not, or cannot buy. Thus, know that the type, make, brand, and features of an intercom system will largely depend on the amount that you are willing to spend on it. So get a clear number in your head BEFORE you shop.
2. Know the basics. You do not want to be duped into buying one brand over another because it is supposedly better and costs ten times more. While different brands may have different systems, their basic components are essentially the same. In general, an intercom has the following basic parts:
The master station - also known as the central control panel, this is the unit that controls the system. This is usually located in a central location in your home, such as the kitchen.
The sub-stations/door stations - also known as the speakers or slave units, these are connected to the control panel.
The power supply - this feeds power to all the units in order to make them function.
3. Determine the range that you want and need. Different intercom systems have varying ranges, with some even reaching almost 1,000 feet. Obviously choosing the range of your intercom system depends on the use and purpose you intend it for. For example, schools have intercoms that have large ranges so that they can signal with a bell that recess is over, and even the children on the soccer fields will be able to hear. For a home intercom the range does not need to be as big.
4. Check its compatibility with your home structure. The ability of the intercom system to deliver a good sound quality depends on the structure of your home. While for a home intercom this is generally not a problem, obstacles, such as metal walls, may interfere with the signals and prevent your intercom system from producing a clear sound. So, determine where you want it, and what stands in the way.
5. Choose the desired type of intercom system. Intercom systems can either be hard-wired or wireless. Hard-wired or traditional intercom systems require wires to connect the entire system that is installed throughout your home, these wires are generally run through the walls. Although they provide minimum interference and/or restrictions, hard-wired intercoms can be expensive to install (even far more expensive than the actual cost of the units themselves). They can also prove to be less convenient, with all the wires running throughout the walls and ceilings. Wireless intercom systems on the other hand are more costly upfront than the traditional, hard-wired ones, but they have the advantage of requiring simple installation: just plug them to a power source, and you're all set! However, sometimes the interference is worse with wireless.
6. Determine the power supply to be used. Do you want to plug in your home intercom system or worry about replacing batteries frequently?
7. Check the product's warranty. Often, the length of an intercom's warranty, and the extent of its coverage, reflects the manufacturer's confidence in their particular product. Find one with a great warranty and you will likely have a great home intercom.
8. Deal with certified and accredited dealers and manufacturers that have been in business for a considerable length of time, who not only offer clear warranty considerations but also extensive after-sales support. This will ensure a good product for your money.
