Home remodeling ideas

The following are some ideas for things you can do when remodeling your home:

1. Update bathrooms. If you want to remodel, you can start at the bathrooms. Replace flooring with some great tiles, get a new elongated toilet, install better lighting, a new bathroom fan, paint a bright color, and add in a pedestal sink. The impact will be huge!

2. Update the house in general. One of the reasons you remodel a home is to give it a newer feel. So, do the little things that count the most for the least cost, such as painting and reflooring, but also do some of the bigger things. You can update hardware really inexpensively and it can give a whole new look to your home. However, you may want to also consider updating the counter tops you have, the windows in your home, etc. A fresh coat of paint and new hardware will go along way though. So, if your budget has room for nothing else, do those things.

3. Take out walls. The new thing is to have bigger, more open floor plans. If you are remodeling your home, one thing that can make a significant difference in the look and feel of your home is to remove a non-load bearing wall, and make a bigger space. Often times this is a lot of fun too because demolition is enjoyable. However, think how great knocking down a wall between a kitchen and family room could be. Now you have a large space for entertaining, you still have your kitchen, but now you can be in it cooking while your guests are socializing in the family room. Another option is to do cutouts in walls instead of taking them out. So, rather than knock down the wall between the kitchen and family room, cut a big "window" out of it. This lets in light, makes the space feel bigger, but still gives distinction between the two areas. The impact is huge, the cost is minimal.

4. Replace windows. Often times you can simply replace your windows and it will give your home a whole fresh feel. Why? Because as windows age they get dirty, and less light gets in. Putting fresh windows in can lighten up a room, and make it feel bigger, cleaner, and new. So, if you want minimal cost for maximum impact, replace old windows with new, low-e, windows.

5. Expand. One great remodeling idea is to expand a master bedroom to make it into a master suite. You can do this by adding a covered patio off of it, knocking out a wall and adjoining it to another room, or literally building it out further.

6. Lighting. One great remodel idea is to add can lighting, tract lighting, and other lighting through the house, as well as fans in main rooms and areas. Lighting can open up a room and give it a great feel.

7. Paint or refinish cabinets. Cabinets are very expensive, and to replace them will cost you a lot. However, if you want to remodel a room with cabinets, you do not want them looking out of place, now do you? So, give your cabinets a new look or feel by painting them or refinishing them. You can change the whole look by adding something to the door like trim, bead board to give it a country feel, etc. You should also update the hardware on your cabinets. This is a great way to remodel without having to start from scratch or spend a fortune.
