Home Security Video System

When it comes to home security video systems there are a few different types of systems available:

VCR Based Systems

These systems run on cameras plugged directly into a VCR that records the video and provides output to a monitor or television set. You can choose a system that connects to your existing TV/Monitor or one that comes with its own Monitor.

PC Based System

PC-Based Systems generally come with the software you need to set up your video monitoring, recording, playback & broadcasting. You can choose a system that connects to your existing PC or one that comes with

DVR Based System

These systems run on cameras that connect to a stand-alone Digital Video Recorder (DVR). DVRs can be set up to broadcast to the web or connect directly to a standard monitor or television for playback. Thus, you can view the footage at home on your monitor, or have it on the web so you can monitor your home security video from anywhere with Internet access.
When it comes to home security video systems there are some basics you need to understand regardless of the system you choose.

One such basic is selecting video cable

There are two factors that govern the selection of cable: the location of cable runs, either indoor or outdoor, and the maximum length of the individual cable runs.

Basically for the best signal you want to use cable that is designed to transmit maximum signaling energy from a 75 ohm source to a 75 ohm load.

Other than that you want to look for cables that have good characteristics and qualities and that match your specific home security video system. Cable characteristics are determined by factors including: core material, dielectric material and shield construction, etc. However, the transmission characteristics of the cable will be heavily influenced by the environment through which the cable is run and the method of installation.
When it comes to home security video systems, a solid core, bare-copper conductor is the best to use, except where flexing occurs. Basically, if the cable is going to move a lot, like if your camera scans the area, or tilts and pans, you need to use cables intended for this movement. This cable will have a stranded wire core. Use only cable with pure copper stranding. Do not use cable with copper-plated steel stranding because it does not transmit effectively.

Basically when it comes to home security video systems, you want to make sure that you always have a good signal, and that your cameras transmit images that you can see, thus making the monitoring a valuable security method. It really does not matter what type of home security video system you use as long as you use the proper cables for that system, and that the cable runs are not too long, or have too much power. If the runs are too long you may loose portions of your images in the transmission, or if there is too much power, you could have surges and problems there as well.

For the best results with your home security video system consult a professional that can help you meet your needs, whether they are video surveillance of every side, angle and aspect of your house, or if it is simply of the front door and back door. Make sure that whatever home security video system you get has warranties, and is installed properly to ensure the best quality picture. If your video security includes the capturing of sound, you will want to ensure that the microphones have filters so that you do not have to listen to the wind as it blows against the microphone, etc. Video security will only help you be more secure if it works under all conditions, rain or shine, so be sure to use what is recommended for your specific system for the best results.
