Home Storage

When you think home storage what comes to mind? For some it is storage containers for the years of "things" that get collected, such as photos, yearbooks, awards, etc. that you just can't seem to throw out, but you don't know where to put or what to do with. For others home storage makes them think of a shed or structure for storing items like yard and garden tools, baby furniture, etc. Home storage is a vague topic, and can cover many areas, so let's address a few:

Organize Your Home

1. If you think clutter and "Things" when you think home storage, then consider the following:
a. Take items such as old letters, photos, awards, certificates, etc. and have them scanned onto a compact disc. This means you still have these items as an image, but you have the convenience of them being so small you could slip them into a simple case, and rather than boxes and boxes of items, you have one or two CD's. Electronic storage does not just have to apply to computer files, you can make electronic images of old tax records, receipts, etc. that you store, and then shred and toss out the actual item.
b. If getting rid of the item is not for you, consider investing is a series of storage containers that allow you to stack, access easily, etc. You do not want to buy different brands and sizes, rather, make life simple, color code if necessary, etc. but be sure that you can stack and that your whatever home storage container you choose is a good size to fit your storage space.

c. Use spaces you did not before consider. Sometimes it just seems like we have so much "stuff" and nowhere to put it all, and that is when home storage becomes a problem, we say, "Well I would love to organize and store all of this "stuff" but I have no where to put it." Try utilizing spaces that previously were not used, such as under beds, many storage containers are made with heights that allow them to slip under a bed easily; tops of tall closets, you can install shelving in those closets with high ceilings, and put things you do not use often up and out of the way; attic crawl spaces, etc. if you have things you can't get rid of, but you really do not need easy access to, consider getting home storage containers that will protect from dust, rodents, and water, and store these items in the basement crawl space, or the attic space.

Home Storage Containers and Sheds

2. If when you think home storage you think organizational accessories, or sheds for your yard, etc. then consider the following:
a. Storage units are viable options, but many people prefer the convenience of not having to go somewhere when they want to get to that camping gear they use once every five years, so instead they invest in a storage shed. This is a great option...if... if what? Storage sheds often become the place for home storage of junk. If you are going to take the time and money to purchase a shed, get a quality one that will protect your items from elements, animals, etc. and then organize it well so that the items being stored are easily accessible. If they aren't easily accessible you might as well toss them out because chances are you won't look at them again anyway.
b. Consider home storage containers. Even if you purchase a shed or something specific for you storage items, it is wise to protect those items further by purchasing durable, heavy duty containers that are uniform, easy to stack, access, etc. Clear containers are a great option, or labels, this way you can see and know what is being stored, and not have to open and go through each box to find something you need.
c. Don't use cardboard! As inexpensive and convenient as it is, this is not a wise home storage choice, it attracts rodents, and cannot withstand moisture or water.
