How long it takes to build a house depends a lot on how quickly the homeowner's can make decisions about what they want in the house. If these decisions are already make during the design time then they can easily incorporate it into the plans. Most times homeowners are not ready to make those decisions that soon, so they procrastinate doing it until later. The longer decisions wait to be made, the longer it takes to build. Also, if decisions are changed later then the project can easily be delayed even longer.

So, how long does it take to build a house? There are many factors that this depends on and some of them are:

  • size of the home

  • type of work required such as: cutting down trees, digging a basement and so on.

  • size of crew

  • permits

It just really depends on what is involved that determines how long it takes to build a home. Here are some detailed situations that show you just how long it would take under these circumstances.

Permits

If you do not already have planning permission permits for the building, this can take several weeks depending on your local authority. Once you have planning permission, it normally takes around 4 weeks from the start of development of the foundations to get the house ready. From then, it normally takes around 10 weeks for the house to be ready for you to move in.

Contractor with a large crew
If you have a contractor with a large crew, then it doesn't take long at all to get your house constructed. It does still depend on the inspectors, but if everything looks great, then you should have a new house within about 2 moths.

Contractor with a small crew
If you have a contractor with a small crew, or if you are doing it yourself to help cut costs, then it is going to take quite awhile. Building a house this way can take up to a 6 months to a year to complete.

Custom homes

A professional designer can make a blue print of the house in a few months, if you know what it is you want. Then permitting comes into affect again and that can take anywhere from 3-10 weeks depending on many factors. Then depending on the size of the home and how much the lot needs worked on before building, you are looking at 6-12 months before completion. Again, that is if you have a skilled and large construction crew working on your home.
