How to avoid theft when building a home
So many things go into building a new home. You have to first decide what type of home you want to build, then you have to get a loan, and then you have to get all of your sub-contractors lined up and start building. There are a lot of stresses when building a new home. You need to make sure that your sub-contractors come in at the right time and also that none of your things get stolen. If you are building a new home you need to make sure that you take precautions. Here are some tips on how to avoid theft when building a home.
The first tip is to make sure that if you have tools in the house that you have some kind of trailer or something that is totally enclosed and has a lock that cannot be cut off. You want to make sure that you make it as hard as possible for some one to break in. The harder it is for some one to break into something the less they will try because they don't want to make it noticeable.
The second tip is to take the tools home that you are not using and to keep the other tools that are portable with you. The best thing to do if you have drills and hammers is to get either a big tool bag that you can keep them in that you can take home every night or a tool box. You will also want to make sure that if you have nails and screws that you also take those with you or lock them up. A lot of sub-contractors will mistake them as their own or their workers won't know the difference and will take them with them. This will cost you more money because you will have to re buy them but it will also cost you more time because you will have to take the time off from building your house to go to the store and buy more.
The third tip is to make sure that you take inventory list of all of your tools and what sub-contractors come to your house and on what day. This will help you get an idea of who has been in the house if things start to disappear.
The fifth tip is to make sure that if you have big saws or other tools that are not portable and have to be left at the house that you don't leave them out in plain sight. If you have a deep cold storage or something along those lines that people won't be going in to work that you put these types of tools in there. This is also a good thing because a lot of times people won't even look in your cold storage because they are dark and cold and people won't suspect that you would put things down there.
The sixth tip is to make sure that you write your name on things that can be taken. For example if you have cordless drills and other tools that take batteries you should write your first and last name on them so that if your sub-contractors have the same type of batteries they won't end up taking yours because they mistake yours for theirs. You will also want to make sure that you write your name on other tools that sub-contractors might mistake as theirs.
These are just some of the suggestions. You also will want to make sure that once you start getting light fixtures and cabinets in that you are locking your house up at night. People have been known for going around to new construction sites and taking light fixtures along with other things that they think might be of value. So to save you money make sure that you do everything you can to avoid theft when building a home.
