How to decide what to do when you remodel
Introduction
Remodeling a space can be very exciting? When you remodel you have the opportunity to make changes to your home that will make it exactly as you have always imagined it. You can quite literally build the home of your dreams during a remodel! Unfortunately all of this excitement is often stifled when it comes time to consider the budget or pay the bill for this dream renovation. Deciding what to do may take some time to dream up, but deciding what to do on a budget, takes careful planning and realistic choices.
Instructions
Very few of us are fortunate enough to be able to afford the house that is so perfect for us that we can move in and never want to change anything. Most of us have at least one or two major things in addition to possibly dozens of minor things that we would like to change about the places where we live. Hopefully the following tips will make it a little easier for you to decide what to do when you remodel.
What to consider while deciding what to do when you remodel
1. Cost - Cost is usually at the top of the list when it comes to deciding factors in a home remodel. Simply put, we cannot make changes that we cannot afford. Although you may be dying to remodel that kitchen, perhaps you can do greater good by distributing that money to other smaller, and more widely spread projects, around your house. It may not be as exciting, but it just may be the most practical way to go.
2. Return on your investment - Smart homeowners are looking are their remodeling options and making decisions based on whether or not the money that they put into the project will appreciate the value of the house to the point that it will be worth doing. After all, you do not want to dump $30,000 into a remodeling project if you are just going to move in the next year and can never hope to at least make that money back when you move. Consulting a realtor about the possible return on your investments before starting your projects can be helpful in the decision making process.
3. Functionality - Often times the aesthetic portion of a home is what we become most obsessed with. When really, our remodeling dollar is usually best spent where it can go to improve the functionality of the home. Remodeling an attic apartment so that the roof is better insulated might not be exciting, but it just might be the best use of your money. Think "practicality" when making your remodeling decisions and try your best to not allow your emotions to dictate what you do to your home and what you end up spending.
4. Displacement - Many times excited families will scrimp and save and finally earn enough money to remodel a large portion of their house or a very involved room such as a kitchen. What these well-intentioned families do not always consider is that it is more the norm than not to have construction remodeling projects extend past their time of completion. Additionally costs of displacement must be considered. If you will be without a kitchen for even a month you can imagine how much the take-out food will add up to.
Other tips
Of course there are many more considerations to keep in mind when making the very important decisions of what to do when you remodel. Plus, families will differ in what they consider to be necessary changes or in what they believe is a fair price to pay for a certain amount of work. What it comes down to is that you really need to take the time to explore all of your options thoroughly so that you avoid having as many regrets once the remodel is complete.
