How to ensure the quality of materials used in your remodel or building is what you paid for.

When it comes to remodeling or building your own home you are making a major investment, which means that you are spending a lot of money on getting the job done right. Not only are you going to have to pay for the labor that it takes to get the entire job done but you are also going to have to pay for the materials that the contractors and sub contractors are going to be using for the job. So since you are paying for the materials yourself and since you want the job done right you are probably not going to spare anything when it comes to paying good money for a higher quality of materials, not many people would use cheap materials that need to be replaced in a few years that would defeat the purpose of doing the job in the first place. So since you are supposed to be paying for high quality materials you might be wondering how you are going to know if you are getting what you have paid for. This is actually a really good question because chances are you are not a home builder or a contractor so you are not sure what is considered good quality and what isn't, let alone how to tell if the materials they are using are the ones that your ordered. But the good news is that even if you are not an experienced home builder or contractor there are still some things that you can do to ensure that you are getting the quality materials that you originally paid for.

Difficulty rating: Easy to moderate

Step one:
The first thing that you are going to want to do is to hire a local contractor who only uses reputable sub contractors and who only uses quality materials. If you don't know of any local contractors there are many resources that you can use to help you find local contractors. You can also ask people you know who have had remodeling work done or who have had a home built who they recommend. But regardless of how you chose them before signing any contract be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have any complaints filed against them.

Step two:
The next thing that you are going to need to do after you have chosen a contractor is to sit down with that contractor and prepare a contract for your job.

Step three:
In the contract some of the things you are going to want to include are: what work is to be done, how long the work should take, where the work is going to be done at, what time they should start working and what materials are going to be used for the job. When you get to the section about the materials that are going to be used you are going to want to be very specific. If you are using lumber you want to include what type of lumber you will be using, what size lumber you will be using and if the lumber will be treated or anything special will be done to it. You actually want to do this for every material that you will be using on the job. Be sure to include the name brand and color of the materials as well.

Step four:
Another way to ensure that you are getting the quality of materials that you have paid for is to order the materials yourself. But this is a drastic step and can actually cause delays especially if you happen to order the wrong supplies.

Step five:
The last thing that you are going to need to do is to check on the job everyday. When you go and look at what has been done be sure to check out the materials that they have been using and make sure they match with what you agreed with when you signed the contract. You can even take a friend along who knows more about construction supplies then you do to make sure that the materials are the ones you ordered and paid for.
