How to find qualified contractors and sub-contractors
When you are about to start a home building or remodeling project, you will want to make sure that you are working with qualified contractors and sub-contractors. Not only will good contractors and sub-contractors ensure that you have great work performed on your house, but it also will make sure that you get your work done within your timeline as well! Here are a couple of ways to help you find qualified contractors and sub-contractors:
Word of mouth: One of the best ways that you can find qualified contractors and sub-contractors are through word of mouth! If you know any friends or neighbors who have recently done some remodeling or home building, ask them about the contractors and sub-contractors that they used. Many people are very willing to talk about good or bad experiences that they have had with their contractor during a building or remodeling project. Make sure that you ask questions like, "Were their contractors and sub-contractors very qualified to do their work?" or "Did they do a good job with the work that they did?" In addition, it is a good idea to ask your friends about any other positive and negative experiences they have had with contractors and sub contractors. You might be able to get a good recommendation for a qualified contractor or sub-contractor by asking your friends!
Meet with contractors and get bids: One of the ways that you can find qualified contractors and sub-contractors are by meeting with potential individuals. Ask these contractors to come and give you a bid for their work. Also ask beforehand if they can bring pictures or examples of previous work that they have done. By looking at examples of work that they have completed, you should be able to see if they are capable of completing the work that you need done. If a potential contractor does not have any pictures or a resume to show you, then you probably are not speaking with a very qualified or professional contractor.
Do research online: Another way that you can find qualified contractors and sub-contractors is by looking online. Sometimes you are able to find great reviews of contractors and sub-contractors by looking at websites. Even Google Maps include a section where you can write a review for a business, and this information might be helpful in allowing you to find the qualified contractor and sub-contractor that you need.
Look in the phone book: Although you will still want to meet with any contractors listed in the phone book before signing a contract, you might be able to find a qualified contractor or sub-contractor by looking in the phone book. If there are ads listed for any contractor, you might find a qualified individual by looking for very large, prominent ads - this means that the contractor has the money (and business!) to allow him to advertise well. Look in the phone book to find a couple of contractors, and then meet with them personally to find out if they are qualified and professional.
As you can see, there are a couple of things that you can do to find qualified contractors and sub-contractors. After finding a qualified contractor or sub-contractor, make sure that you can agree on a reasonable price for the work that you want done. If you cannot agree on a price that you think is fair, you might want to search for another qualified contractor or sub-contractor instead. The most important thing, however, is that your contractor and sub-contractor are qualified, even if you have to pay a little bit of extra money - you don't want to have a shoddy job done on your home!
