How to finish your garage

When it comes to finishing the garage it is usually the last thing that gets done around any household. After all it is just the extra storage space to put all the junk that won't fit in the house right? Well, that's how it's used to be sometimes but if you figure out how to finish your garage it can be much more than that.

Finishing your garage
Garage finishing can have several different possibilities. You can keep it as a basic garage that can fit your tools, work bench, and your car. You can transform it into another living space, work shop, or hobby shop. Or you can even turn your garage into a game room. There are so many possibilities. And if you just can't decide you can combine a few of your ideas and create a finished room all of your own. The first step however is deciding what and how you want to finish it and trying to give yourself a realistic time frame in when you want to get it all done.

Plan it out
Without a plan you're not going to get very much done so take a few minutes (or likely more) and think of a plan. If you are thinking of doing this on your own it is going to take some serious organization and planning on your part. If taking on this task seems like it will be too much then you might want to consider hiring a professional contractor to help with the job. A professional contractor will cost more money, but it might be worth it if you have absolutely no idea what you're doing.

Electrical Work
Let's say for the sake of this article that you are finishing the garage with the idea in mind that you can keep your tools and work bench in it as well as use it for parking; a good use for a garage. And since there will be things in it that you want kept safe you will need to use some electrical work to operate the door, and use for electrical outlets. Power receptacles are a nice feature to have in a garage as you can bring in a couple twenty amp circuits for things like power tools, air compressors, or refrigerators. Putting in electrical work does however require a permit so you will have to check with your local city offices to make sure you obtain the needed permits. If you are working with a professional they should know what types of permits you need and will likely take care of that for you.

Finishing the Walls
Finishing garage walls is a relatively easy job to tackle yourself. Before you finish the walls however make sure that you have the number of power receptacles you need and want so you don't have to rip out walls later on to get the rest of them in. If you're planning on taking the time to put dry wall in you might also want to take some time to put insulation under the drywall. If you live in a state with cold winters insulating the garage will really pay off in terms of energy. After you have the insulation in the walls your next step will be to get the drywall up, tape it and then mud over the seams. You can get instructions on how to do it at any local hardware store or by putting in a search online. It is a fairly easy job.

Finishing the floors
The last part of finishing your garage is finishing the floors. An unfinished concrete floor is extremely cold. It will also attract automobile fluid more so than if you finished it off. You can install a garage floor covering that will instantly make a huge difference to the overall look and feel of your garage.

Finishing your garage can be a lengthy task, as is any remodel you do on your home. However if you choose to finish your garage it can save you money on utility bills with insulation and add value to your home.
