How to keep your home safe when under construction

There are two parts to keeping your home safe when it is under construction, safe from theft, and safe from accident. Let's take a look at both:
Safe from theft-
If you are remodeling, you are probably concerned about the people entering and exiting your house constantly. So, the best way to protect yourself from theft during a remodel is to keep anything valuable about of eyesight. Do not leave your wallet, cash, electronics, etc. in plain view as they act as a temptation. So, get a small safe and lock things in there.
If your home is under construction you will want to keep it safe from theft. You do not want your bath tub or fixtures to get taken, or the materials you purchase and have on sight taken at night. So, what can you do? You will want to rent a storage pod of some sort so that you can lock away all materials at night. You will also want to take regular inventory so that you do not run the risk of your subs, etc. stealing your materials.
If your home is under construction or being remodeled you run the risk of materials being stolen by those working on your home. There are a few things you can do to protect yourself and make your home safe from theft in this regard. One, you can hire reputable contractors. Their reputation is probably too important to them to risk stealing and getting caught. Second, you can stop in at the job site regularly and unannounced so that you can check up on things, and make sure no materials are "misplaced."
Safe from accident-
One of the best ways to keep your home safe from accident when under construction is to have everyone wear a hard hat. Even guests that walk through the premises should wear a hard hat.
Another great way to keep your home safe from accident during construction is to make safety rules and enforce them. Be sure that everyone wears the proper foot wear, and that everyone knows what is acceptable and not.
You will want to ensure that you remind workers not to leave hammers on ladders or on stairs as they could fall and injure someone.
You will want to ensure that they use the proper voltage when using electricity.
You will want to ensure they wear gloves, and safety goggles when using power tools.
You will want to ensure that the people using the power tools have been properly trained and take any manufacturer safety recommendations.
Keeping your home safe when under construction is important. You may also want to consider getting worker's compensation insurance so that if someone is injured on your premises you have the cost covered. You can often hire companies that already have worker's compensation in force. You want to be sure that you are not liable for accident and injury due to neglect or mishaps. So, have consent forms to be signed, and check your legal options.
If you can follow the above recommendations your home will be much safer when under construction. This will mean less cost for you as you will not be paying workers for missed time when they are hurt. You will not be paying for materials twice because they are stolen, etc. Just be sure to review all safety measures with your contractor and subs so that ignorance is not an option.
