These days, with the recent economic push to go green, energy efficient homes are all the rage. But not only are they good for the planet, they are also proven to help save you money on energy and heating and cooling costs.

If you are doing some remodeling and would like to make your home more energy efficient when remodeling, consider the following ways to make your home more energy efficient when remodeling:

Seal your windows and doors.
Air sealing will seal the cracks around your windows and doors to keep air from leaving your home as well as entering in. This can save big amounts on your heating and cooling bills because you will lose less cooled or heated air. There are different types of insulation you can install fairly easily, including non-fiberglass batts, insulation you can spray in the form of foam, and sprayed fiber insulation.

Install high efficiency toilets.

High efficiency toilets are designed for water conservation, and use an average of 20% less water per flush than a standard toilet, which uses over a gallon and a half. With a high efficiency toilet, you can save up to 8,760 gallons of water each year (for a family of four people).

Energy efficient ventilation

There are a number of new mechanical ventilator systems on the market that measure the moisture content of outdoor and crawlspace air. In addition, they only provide ventilation when the outdoor air is drier than crawlspace air. This type of ventilation is also an energy efficient form of remodeling.

Have your HVAC sized

Your Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning units will lose a lot of energy from ill-fitted systems. Even a loose pipe or tubing here and there can make a difference in your bill. Instead, while remodeling, make sure you have your HVAC systems sized so you they fit properly and are will be more energy efficient.

Change your lighting.

Fluorescent lighting will make a big difference in the energy efficiency of your home, so when remodeling, change your lights to compact fluorescent lamps. These are smaller versions of full-size fluorescent lights, but they are four times more efficient than regular light bulbs. In addition, they last up to 10 times longer, so they save money in the long run.

Go wireless

If you are remodeling and plan on installing new lighting or are updating your heating and cooling system, consider wireless lighting and thermostats. These can use sensors, so your lights will turn on when someone is present, or they can also be set to timers, allowing you to have lights automatically turned off or the thermostat to increase or decrease depending on who is going to be home. This is much more energy efficient and will save quite a bit of money.

Solar energy

If you live in a high-sun area, consider switching to solar energy when remodeling. Solar power draws on the sun's energy and can heat your water and also light the inside of your house through the use of skylights. Most of these systems also have back-up water heating or lighting, so you will never be without hot water or interior lighting.

Making your home more energy efficient when remodeling is not only good to the environment, but good to your wallet as well. These are just a few ways you can make your home more energy efficient when remodeling.
