How to save money when remodeling your main living areas

Remodeling the main living areas of a home can be a great way to update an older home or prepare a home for sale. As styles change and technology improves, the old green shaggy carpet from the 1970's might need a change. Just like with any remodel, going overboard can be really easy to do. However, going overboard could cost more money than it is worth to the overall value of the home. Here are some tips on how to save money when remodeling the main living areas of a home.

Do It Yourself

Many parts of a main living area remodel can be done without the help of a contractor. When planning the remodel, try to identify all of the parts of the project that can be done without help. Some parts might include removing old carpet, painting, refinishing a wood floor, or installing a wood burning stove in place of an existing fireplace. Also, redecorating can be done without help. Finding a way to do all of these things will help lower the cost of the remodel tremendously.

Use Existing Space

While it might seem like a good idea to knock down an existing wall or building a new wall, it usually isn't. For the most part, doing huge construction projects in a remodel are going to add large costs on to the overall price of the remodel. The best way to go is to find new ways to use old space. Moving furniture around, redecorating, or changing the way a room is used are great ways to make existing space look like new space.

Reuse Major Items

It can be tempting to want to put all new furniture in a remodeled room. While this can be fun, it can also be expensive. One way to save money while still making a room look new is by swapping furniture around. All of the furniture in a given room may not work after the remodel, but some of it may. Or, some of the furniture from the remodeled room may help to make another room in the house seem new. Limiting the amount of new furniture that needs to be purchased will drastically lower the cost of a remodeling project.

Neutral Colors

When choosing new carpet or furniture, it is important to remember that current trends and styles will likely not last as long as the remodeled room will. Just like that shaggy green carpet went out of style, so will the loud colors that are in style currently. The safest way to go when choosing carpet or furniture is to find neutral colors. Not only will these colors stay in style forever, but they will end up costing less to purchase also. Another place neutral colors will help save money is with paint. By using a more neutral color on the walls, the room will not need to be painted nearly as often.

Remodeling the main living areas of a home can be revitalizing to an old home. While these rooms are generally less expensive to remodel than a kitchen or bathroom, prices can add up. However, by doing the work without help, avoiding major construction, reusing major items, and sticking to neutral colors, remodeling a main living area can be a fun and cost efficient project.
