Keeping your home secure during a remodel

Keeping your home secure during a remodel can be very challenging. It is essential that you keep your home secure during your particular remodel no matter what. This is not only for your safety but also for the crews that are working on your remodel and children that are in the neighborhood.
How can you keep your home secure during a remodel? Here are some tips for you to keep in mind while you are remodeling.
- Block off the work area with yellow tape to help restrict access to any kids who may want to come too close to the work site.
- If you have your own children it is best to let them know where they are to play and to keep those toys away from the remodeling area.
- Find out when large orders are going to be delivered. With children in the house it may be best to be gone during this time.
- Make sure your children or children in the neighborhood know not to touch the crews' tools or machinery. They are not to play with them no matter what.
- Don't leave your children alone on the work site and don't expect the crew men to be your babysitters. This is a big liability on both you and the crew.
- If there are hazardous materials that are being dealt with during the remodel you will want to be sure and take the proper precautions.
- Designate separate doors if possible. Have one entrance for the work crew to come and go with their tools and materials and another entrance for you and your family to use during the remodel.
- Protect your pets. Keep them away from the work area. Dogs and cats can be a huge danger to themselves and the work crew if they are underfoot. The best option is to keep them in a closed room away from all the work. You can also look at pet sitters to look after your pets during an extensive remodel.
- Make sure tools and materials are stored safely. Your contractor should keep any dangerous items out of reach of children. Most of these material or tools will be taken home nightly. If they leave them make sure they are secure from both children and thieves. A locked storage shed is the best idea to keep all these things safe.
- Make sure that any holes or pits in the floor or yard at the end of the day are covered or repaired. If any one is walking through the remodel area then they won't trip and possible hurt themselves.
- Plastic sheets or tarps are a good way to secure the area. Hanging tarps or plastic sheets will help prevent dust and debris from traveling throughout the house. If an outside wall has been removed it will help in keeping cold or hot air out of the work area and into your home.
- If part your home is going to be left exposed to the outside you will also need to use sheets or tarps to cover the exposure. Add some lights to keep the area well lit and deter any intruders.
- If you will have crews passing through your living areas on a regular basis you will want to protect your valuables. Keep them in a safe place, either a locked room or a neighbor's home. After all you don't really know the crew.
Keeping your home secure during a remodel can be done if you take the right precautions. You not only have to secure your home from intruders but also from potential accidents.
