Kitchen remodel money savers

Remodeling your kitchen is a great idea-kitchen remodels are one of the updates you can make to your home that can give you the highest return on the money you invest into it.
However, kitchen remodels don't come cheap. If you would like to remodel your kitchen but don't want to break the bank, the following are some great ideas for kitchen remodel money savers:
Do the demolition work yourself
When it comes to tearing up tile and flooring, unless you are physically unable to, there is no reason you can't do these things yourself. Get some friends, neighbors, or coworkers to help you and do the demolition work yourself. Borrow a truck (or rent a dumpster if there is a lot) and haul it away yourself. You will be surprised how much money this will save you-usually in the hundreds, sometimes thousands.
Do your own painting.
Most kitchens undergo some sort of repainting when they are being remodeled. However, since most painters charge at least a couple of dollars per square foot, plus materials, you'll be able to save a great deal of money doing the painting yourself. Make sure you tape around the edges and set drop cloths over the flooring and countertops to prevent messes.
Refinish your cabinets
Unless they are horribly outdated or falling apart, consider refinishing or repainting your cabinets instead of gutting them and replacing them entirely, a feat that could run your kitchen remodeling bill up thousands of dollars. If your cabinets are structurally sound, made of solid wood, and are in overall good shape, you can still get the look of new cabinets without spending all the money.
Painting or stripping and refinishing your cabinets is very inexpensive (the cost of paint and some sandpaper) to do. New hinges and knobs and hardware can also drastically change the look of your cabinets. Check out a few books and websites for before and after pictures and how-to information.
Look at different flooring options
If you follow trends, you'll notice that wood flooring is very popular in kitchens and dining areas right now. However, this type of flooring is also very expensive to purchase and then install. Laminate flooring may be a good option for you if you want the look of hardwood without the price. Laminate flooring looks identical to wood flooring but costs about half what you would be paying for hardwood. In addition, it's easier to care for and holds up better against damage and scratches than hardwood, which is an added plus if you have kids and pets.
Save money on labor
If you have friends, relatives, co workers, or neighbors who are handymen, consider asking for a little help when it comes to installation of flooring, cabinets, lighting, and other things that would otherwise require labor. Because labor makes up a huge chunk of your overall costs for remodeling, getting friends and relatives to help you out will end up saving you thousands. Offer to help them out in return with their own projects in return.
Keep your eyes open for sales.
It's a good idea to keep track of the sales and promotions going on in hardware stores while you are doing a remodel. Many stores will give you a substantial discount (sometimes up to 20%) on purchases you make with a store credit card (be careful to pay it off before interest accrues), which can end up saving you on materials.
These are just a few tips to help you save money on your kitchen remodels.
