Learning to budget for overages when you build a home

Building a home is a very demanding task - emotionally, in terms of time expenditure and financially. It is one of the most important things that you can do to enjoy life more and it is important to complete the things you want done while sticking to a schedule and a budget while also remaining sane. When you are building a home, it is very important to learn and understand how to budget for overages. Here are some steps and tips that will help you to avoid going over budget on you r house building or remodeling.

First of all it is nearly always better to assume that things are going to cost more than you originally planned. One of the most common mistakes that people make when they are building or remodeling is hoping and expecting that they can really find a product or service cheaper than may really be possible. They can also hope to decrease the costs by doing a job themselves and then end up spending more because they do it wrong and then have to hire someone else to do the job anyway. When you are planning a certain project or aspect of building, a contractor or store will normally provide you with an estimate of the costs that will be incurred while the project is done. It is very important to understand the difference between an estimate or quote and the actual price. The estimate is what the contractor expects something to cost under normal circumstances with the least amount of labor and excess material involved. If you are extremely picky and insist things be done a certain way then you can expect there to be more labor involved and therefore more charges for labor. If you want to have special tiles and end up throwing away half of the ones in each box, it will cost much more to get the job done how you want. Assume that everything will cost more than it originally seems. It is probably to budget for 10-15% more cost in the first place so that you don't go over your budget. You can also ask about possible scenarios that would increase the cost of the project and maybe expect a worst case scenario.

Don't assume that you can get everything done

Don't assume that you can get everything done as fast or as efficiently as you had hoped unless you are very experienced and disciplined. It is also extremely important to budget your time. If you have a project you want to get done, don't give yourself only a week to complete a project when it would realistically take several. Learn to know your limits and the other time constraints placed on you. Most people don't have all of their time to dedicate to building a home or remodeling. People have jobs, families, responsibilities and need breaks every once in a while. Make sure to account for these things when you are planning a project. It is also important and kind to give the same consideration to other people's time. Contractors have other clients and families of their own and sometimes unrealistic expectations are placed on them when their time is not considered into the equation. Give more time to accomplish something than you think it will take and you may be pleasantly surprised.

It is great to budget time and money this way. If you overestimate your budget and don't spend nearly as much time and money on a project as you thought you would have, then you have the excess to do something else with. If installing the floor takes only 2 weeks and you had planned 1 month to complete it, then you have 2 extra weeks to either rest or start on something new that will speed up the whole process. If you budget $1000 for a bathroom remodel and it ends up taking less than this, then you can get new towels and robes or have a nice evening out on the money you saved.
