Dealing with the permit monster


When you are involved in home building or remodeling, you will have to get some kind of permit from the public agency which oversees building and land development in your area. For a lot of people, this "permit monster" is one of the most difficult and frustrating parts of home building and remodeling. Sometimes getting these permits can really take a long time, and you may feel like there is nothing that you can do about it! However, there are a couple of things that do to help deal with the permit monster. Here are a couple of helpful hints:

 Find out what codes apply to you: The first thing that you should be familiar with are the types of permits and codes which apply to you and your area. A while ago, most states had accepted the building codes for the International Conference of Building Official's "Uniform Building Code," but this is not the case for all states today! Instead, the International Residential Building Code is generally seen as the standard building code in your area. Check with your Building Department to find out which type of code is applicable in your specific area.

Dealing with liability issues during a remodel


When people are remodeling a home, they often do not think about the liability issues that can happen during the remodeling process. However, liability is an important thing to consider when you are doing a remodel. Liability is an type of obligation which binds a person or a company to settle the debt of another person or company. Liability insurance is very important because it helps to compensate any third party which experiences damages or loss - in other words, if the contractor ruins something in your kitchen while remodeling, then his liability insurance will be able to cover your loss. Liability insurance is very important because it helps you to know that you will not be literally paying for any mistakes that the contractor might make. Here are some things that you should know about dealing with liability issues during a remodel:

 Liability insurance: You should always, always, always make sure that your contactor has liability insurance before he or she begins work on your home! You should check the documentation of your contractor's liability insurance as well, and not just simply take his word for it. Write down the policy number and call his insurance company to make sure that your contractor really does have insurance. It's better to be safe than sorry! If your contractor does not have liability insurance, then you might want to find another contractor. Another thing that you can do is see if the liability portion of your homeowner's policy can be extended to include your contractor and his work in your home.
