Common problems and solutions encountered when switching out light fixtures

Lighting is very important in any household and is even more important during the winter or rainy season when there is less natural light and when the lights go out. Having lights out of commission can be a very serious problem and in many cases will require you to do some electrical work.

It may seem like a no brainer, but most problems with lights happen when there is some kind of interruption from the light fixture to the power source. The most common problems can occur with the wiring, the connection to the fixture or even the connection to the switch. If you aren't comfortable working with wiring or electrical components, then it's probably a good idea to hire an electrician or work with someone who is more comfortable working with electricity.

Choosing light fixtures

For many people who may be remodeling a home for the first time, they may not realize just how many times of light fixtures there are. It is important for a person to be familiar with the different types of light fixtures when they are choosing their light fixtures.

There are four main types of light fixtures. These four categories are: task lighting, protective and safety lighting, decorative lighting, and general lighting. There are also different kinds of fixtures. For example, spotlights, track lights, chandeliers, fluorescent lights that are ceiling or wall mounted, and light fixtures that are under cabinets.

Decorative lighting fixtures are used to draw attention to a specific area of a room such as a picture or a fireplace mantel. Task lighting fixtures are used in rooms where only a few lights need to be turned on that focus on certain areas in the room, such as in the kitchen. Safety and protective lights are used in places like stairwells, to make the areas safer. And general lighting fixtures are used to light a rooms such as bathrooms and bed rooms.

The first thing you will want to consider before choosing what type of lighting scheme you want in your room is the size and the color. If you have a small room with little natural light you are going to want to choose lighting that is bright and illuminates the room. This will help it feel more open and not so gloomy. And vice versa; in a room that has a lot of natural light and is bigger you won't need a ton of light to open up the space. The size and color of any room can make a big difference in what type of lighting you choose to go with.
