Little things you can do to make a remodel go smoother
Remodeling your home or parts of your home can be stressful and time consuming. Depending on the size of your remodel there are many things to accomplish and just as many things that can go wrong. So, what little things can you do to make a remodel go smoother?
To help your remodel go smoother you should start out with a clear plan of what you want done on your particular remodel. Set your goals as to why you are remodeling. Are you remodeling to increase the value or for personal reasons? You may also be remodeling to repair damaged parts of your home. No matter what your answer is to why you are remodeling you need to do your research. If you are remodeling your home to increase its' value then it is a good idea to find out what the most popular upgrades are. You will also want to know what the return is for that remodel. If you are doing the remodel for yourself then you can go ahead and paint the walls red or install the exotic faucets you have always wanted.
After setting the last goal of why you want the remodel done you will then need to decide who will be doing the work. You can save some money by doing some of the littler projects yourself. You should make sure that you know what you are doing on the littler projects. If by accident you should mess up the littler project it could become more costly to get the repair done then if you had hired someone in the first place. If you are doing electrical or plumbing work then you should hire a contractor no matter how little the job. The contractor will be held responsible for any work that is not done correctly and not you. If you hire contractors for any other parts of you remodel be sure to check out their references. You need to be able to see some of their work before inviting them into your home. This way you will be familiar with their work.
Making a budget is another little thing you can do to make your remodel go smoother. If you have hired a contractor for your remodel they will then help you make the budget. If you are doing the remodel yourself then you will need to do the budget yourself. There are many hidden costs involved in a home remodel. Do not forget the little things like nails or screws. You should budget for problems that can come up with your remodel and budget for any extra time you may need to finish your particular remodel. Plant to budget about 15-25% more then what you expect. This will help for emergencies or other extras you may come across like take out food or laundry service. The more detailed your budget the smoother your remodeling process will be.
Keep a list of your remodel. This is a way to help you stay organized during the remodeling process. Start the list with everything that needs to be done. Include everything from start to finish, the more detailed the more organized you will feel. As projects get completed you will mark them off the list. Not only will you be able to see the work being completed you will also be able to keep track of it on paper. This is a great way to make sure that nothing gets forgotten.
You should plan on doing your remodel little by little. If you want both the kitchen and bathrooms done then they should be done at the same time or schedule different times to do them. Try not to change your mind in the middle of a project. This will drag out the remodel and increase your expenses.
The more things you plan for and budget for during a remodel will go a long way in helping your remodel go smoother. Take the time to research what you are doing and who you may want to hire. When the remodel is over you will have something new to enjoy and relax from all the hard work.
