Making small spaces feel bigger than they are by remodeling

You have a small house or small apartment and the rooms are tiny also. Maybe you have just one room in your house that is small. You want to make the space look bigger but are not sure how to do it. There are options available while remodeling to help trick the eye into thinking the space is bigger. Here are a few hints on making small spaces feel bigger than they are by remodeling.

When remodeling you don't necessarily have to move any walls if you redecorate from ceiling to floor. Take stock of what furniture you have in the room. What items you want to keep and what items to get rid of. You'll want to stay with one big piece of furniture and some smaller pieces to go along with the bigger piece. You should group the furniture around the walls keeping the middle of the floor clear. This will help make the room feel bigger with the open space in the middle.

Another step in the redecorating/remodeling is to use colors that are monochromatic including the floor. This should include furniture. You can always get the furniture reupholstered to match the colors you want. You may also want to reupholster if your fabric on your furniture is patterned or multiple colors. Choose cool colors like lighter blues or greens they will make your space feel airy and not heavy. Try tone on tone fabrics for the furniture and drapery if needed. Coordinating the walls and the furniture will give the room an even appearance. Don't use lots of different colors in your small spaces as it tends to break up the room and make it appear even smaller.

Lighting will also help your small space look and feel bigger. If there are windows let the sun in by getting rid of the draperies or use light airy fabrics. If not maybe you could add a window or use a wallpaper mural to make it look like a window. Use light colored lamps to match the other colors in the room or use recessed lightning. The lighter the room the brighter and bigger it will feel. Stay away from big and heavy light fixtures or lamps these will weigh down the room making it look smaller.

Another great way to make your small space feel bigger is to add mirrors. A full wall of mirrors may be a little too much for your tastes but it will make the room look and feel larger then it really is. If you don't want to go with a full wall mirror try just a big framed mirror on one or two walls. If you use the mirrors on opposite walls the reflections off the mirrors will give the room a bigger look.

Use materials that you can see through. This could be glass table tops or transparent draperies. If you can see beyond the table top or wall it will give a better feeling of a bigger room. Using this trick will open up the room beyond its limits allowing the room to feel and look bigger.

If you can make a cubby or bar window into the next room while remodeling it would be a nice touch to make the room feel bigger. You can then add a transparent drapery or just leave blank. Paint the walls in the adjoining room close to the same color so it looks like one big room.

You can make a room feel bigger with many decorating tricks. If you are looking at a full remodel then think of leaving out a wall or adding windows to the outside or even to an adjoining room. Use monochromatic colors including the floors but make sure that the colors are not dark but instead light and airy. With all these tips you should be able to make your small spaces feel bigger when remodeling.
