Consider small changes
If the majority of your remodeling budget is going into a new television, surround sound, other media, or new furniture, there are still plenty of small, low-cost changes to your media room that will actually have a great effect over the look of the room as a whole. For example, repainting the room or adding inset lighting, dimmers, or track lighting can give your media room a whole new feel. You can also add inexpensive décor to your media room, such as movie posters framed inexpensively (many movie rental stores will give these away for free) or tin film reels you can hang on your walls.

Be on the lookout for bargains.
You can save hundreds and even thousands of dollars if you don't have to have brand new everything. Many times, people will sell practically new media furniture, couches, sectionals, even media room seating, entertainment centers, or other things you could use for a remodel for very inexpensively. Keep an eye out for classified ads; they are a great way to save money on nearly new things you can use for a media room remodel. Craigslist is also a great source for this.

Refinish old media furniture.
You don't have to get all new furniture for your media room to look new. Refinish what you already have, or buy used media furniture and paint or refinish it to make it your own. You'll be amazed at what a little paint and new hardware, like knobs or drawer pulls, will do to media furniture. Don't be afraid to buy mismatched pieces either; they can all be stained the same color for matching sets.

When you can, do it yourself.
Many times, remodeling jobs aren't as complicated as they seem and can be done with a little practice and studying a remodeling book or two. This goes for media room remodels as well. While it's best to leave some things, such as the installation of expensive media equipment (think hanging a plasma screen television on a wall) to professionals, many remodeling jobs can be done by the do-it-yourselfer. To get an idea of whether you can realistically do a project or not, make sure you know exactly what it entails. Also, many hardware stores will offer free or low-cost workshops for certain projects, and these are very useful.

Shop sales.
You'll be amazed at the amount of money you can save simply by shopping sales at local furniture stores and hardware stores, depending on what you are doing for your media room remodel. You may even want to consider opening a store credit card where you are going to be buying most of your supplies, then put it all on the card-often, these stores offer a percentage of up to 20% off your first purchase with the card. (Just be sure to pay it off before interest accrues.)
