What Paints to use For Faux Finishes

painting19148660.jpg
Faux Finishes are different painting techniques that give different looks and textures to your walls. The interior of your home can look dramatically different before and after by applying various faux finish techniques. The question comes with faux finishing, what paint type, or finish type, do I use for the various techniques. This is a very real question as there are a variety of paints suitable for use on different surfaces and for achieving different effects. So, in answer, it is important that you choose the right paint for the surface on which you are painting, and to get the look you desire.

Let's go over this in a little more detail.for example, porous surfaces and bare woods require the use of a primer to seal the wall and provide a base for the paint finishes. An undercoat on top of the primer not only protects the surface but also provides a smooth base for the topcoat. Let's look at the typical choice we have for paint. Traditional paints are water or oil based and typically come in four finishes: Matt, Satin, Gloss, and Eggshell, all of which can be referred to with other names such as flat paint, etc. But for our purposes, this is how we will refer to them.

Varnishes vs. Paint

hardwoodfloor37472373.jpg
How do you know when to use paint, and when to use varnishes? The choice is not as simple as it seems, but with a little understanding about what paint is supposed to do, and what a varnish is supposed to do, your choice can be simple. Paint and varnish have one thing in common: they're both designed to protect wood. If your goal is to simply protect whatever wood you have that needs a finish, you can pick either paint or varnish and be perfectly happy. However, that's just about where the similarities end when it comes to the two.

Besides protection, one of the points of paint is color. Paint is designed to bring color to the wood, but that color may conceal the wood grain. In contrast, stains and varnishes enter the pores of the wood but remain relatively clear, so chances are good that the grain of the wood will remain visible. You can get stains and varnishes that are tinted to add a slight coloration to the wood, but this is more natural colors, and still shows the qualities and characteristics of the wood itself.

Staining

deck30324532.jpg
Staining furniture and woodwork is a popular alternative to painting. Often times staining gives a more regal or elegant look, and allows the natural textures and grains of the wood to show, whereas paint covers them up. Because staining is much like painting in that it protects wood from weather and damage, it is a viable option. So, let's explore staining a little further.

What are Stains?

Exterior stains have been around for over a hundred years. In the early stages of stains, they were simple used to protect and decorate wood roof and wall shingles. These types of stains were formulated with durable but toxic creosote bases. Painters would dip shingles into buckets of stain to ensure the best possible absorption into the wood and also to treat the backside of the shingle prior to installation. When inexpensive asphalt shingles replaced wood on roofs, staining sort of lost its status, but regained it in the 1970s with the advent of rough-sawn board and sheet siding. This involved a more modern stain type, which can be divided into two types:

Oil-Based Paints

Download file

Oil based paints are the most appropriate paints for exterior finishes and trim, as they are the most durable paints available. Thus, while Latex paints are the most popular interior paint products, oil-based are the most popular exterior paint product, not to mention the most suitable exterior paint product as well. Oil based paint bonds well to wood, metal, and even to dust, chalky, dirty, or oily surfaces. Thus, it is easier to use on outside surfaces which are harder to keep clean. However, the difficulty with using oil based paints outside is that oil repels water, so if your surface is at all damp you can't use oil-based paints, it will not bond. Thus, you have to time your paint job right so that the surface you are painting is nice and dry. You will probably want to use oil based paints outside only. They are not a great paints for inside projects because they require smelly clean-up solvents, and emit a strong odor.
Oil-based paints consist of a pigment in a vehicle made up of resins and thinners. When thinners evaporate, the resins form a hard coating while the pigment forms the color.

Latex

paint31932963.jpg

When it comes to paint you have to pick what type of paint you want to use. Every paint type has advantages and disadvantages, and some are better for certain projects than others. Latex is the most popular paint choice for the interior of the home. It is durable, safe, easy to clean, dries quickly, and has no fumes. While it can be used for exterior painting, it is best suited for interior living spaces. Why? Well, latex paints are often referred to as "breather" paints because they are more porous than oil paints, and allow water through at times. Thus if they are used on new wood, without a good oil primer, or if the paint is applied too thinly, rain or heavy dew can penetrate the coating and reach the wood causing warpage etc., hence the reason it is mostly an inside paint.

So, what are the advantages of Latex Paints?

Latex Paints can be thinned with water and are easily applied. While they are different, they do have many advantages over oil-based paints. For example:

Interior paints are available in flat (no shine), satin, semigloss and gloss (high shine) finishes. So, let's take some time to look at each finish more closely.

Flat paints: When it comes to flat paints you have two options, you have an alkyd- base paint that thins with turpentine or mineral spirits, or a latex base paint that thins with water. Latex paints are usually vinyl or acrylic based or a combination of the two.

So what are the differences? Well, alkyd Flat paints offer the advantage of hiding blemishes, etc. better with one coat than will comparable latex flats, but they also offer the disadvantage of brushes and other tools having to be washed with turpentine or a similar solvent. Latex flats on the other hand spread easily, especially on porous surfaces, and seldom require a primer, and the application tools can simply be cleaned with water.

How To Clean and Maintain Paintbrushes

painting63299781.jpg

If you do a good job with your painting, you will probably purchase high quality paintbrushes, and in order to ensure that those paint brushes stay in tip top condition you will want to be sure to clean and maintain them properly. So, the following are some tips and suggestions for how to clean and maintain paintbrushes properly and extend their life.

Good brush cleaning starts even before the brush touches any paint. In order to make final cleanup easier and prolong the life of your brush, always dampen the brush with the appropriate solvent or thinner for the finish material you intend to use before loading the brush with finish. This is called preloading the brush.

Preloading the brush draws thinner into the ferrule and prevents the finish from drying out on the brush during use. Preloading also prevents the finish from clumping as you apply it. So, as you can see this has several benefits.

However, it is not always 100% fail safe. If you use the brush for an extended period of time, and notice the finish material beginning to dry or clump on the brush, stop for a minute and clean the brush.

Problems happen, and almost everyone that paints faces one or more of these typical problems. So, the question is, how do you solve them? Blistering: bubbles resulting from loss of adhesion causing lifting of the paint film.

The causes of blistering are usually one of the following, it is because the house was painted over a wet or damp surface and the paint used was oil-based; the surface was a warm exterior surface, and was painted in direct sunlight; a latex paint film exposed to high humidity, moisture, dew, or rain shortly after paint application, especially if the surface preparation was inadequate; or moisture inside the house is escaping through the walls (not having proper ventilation.

So, how do you solve blistering? Well, your first thing is to try and remove the source of moisture. Then you want to repair loose caulking and consider installing exhaust fans. You remove the blister by scraping, then sanding, priming any bare wood, then repainting with a top quality latex paint.

Primary Colors: The primary colors consist of 3 unique colors, red-yellow-blue. When mixing these 3 colors hues, at least in theory, all the other hues of the color wheel, including black can be created. These colors provide the ultimate contrast of hue and the greatest luminosity. Primaries express fundamental qualities, folk art, embroidery, costumes, etc. They are exuberant, decorative, tonic, vigorous, decisive. So, if this is what you want for your home, and this expresses who you are, and what you want your rooms to say about you, then use primary colors.

Interior and Exterior Paint

paintbucket31932831.jpg
Interior and exterior paints have some major differences that make some paints suitable for the outdoors, and some not, etc. Paint used to be just pigment and milk, but now there are chemical additives into their products to give them gloss, washability, mildew resistance, and toughness. If you want your interior and exterior paint to look great and last for a long time, you should choose your paint carefully, paint is not one type does all, there are specific paint types needed for various surfaces, and exposures to elements, etc. So, do your research up front, and use a paint that will last and work for your situation, and you won't have costly and obnoxious paint failures shortly down the road.

So, what do you need to do to do your research for interior and exterior paint?
Start by simply looking at what you plan to paint. Is it wood, metal, plaster, drywall? Knowing this makes a big impact on what type of interior or exterior paint you use, new drywall, for example, requires an entirely different paint and application technique than simply painting over a top coat over existing paint. Going from light to dark, masking handprints, or painting high traffic areas like banisters all require different approaches and paint products, all of which can be found on PaintingSuppliesDirect.com.

Interior or exterior, choosing the right paint depends on a variety of factors. But the most important is personal preference, so know what you are painting, and then consider the following factors about paint:

Latex vs. Oil Paints

painting31932062.jpg
The type paint you use will determine how well it will last and wear. Whether you use latex or oil-based, depends on the surface to be covered, the conditions it will face, and any base paint underneath. So, when you are making your paint type choice, consider these factors before deciding. There are other factors that will help you decide what type of paint to use as well, such the type of the surface you want to paint, its condition, age, and the type of paint previously used on the surface, if any.

When it comes right down to it you are making a choice between two different paint types: water-based latex paints; and solvent-based paints, which are referred to as oil-based paints or "alkyds."

Selecting The Right Paint Sheen

painting31931453.jpg
Paint sheen, or in other words, the gloss of the paint will determine its ability to hide flaws, enhance architectural features, or make for easy cleanup and stain resistance. Thus, using the right paint sheen for your paint project is important. Not every room requires the same paint sheen type, and using the ideal type for each room is your best way to ensure a high quality paint job.

So, how do you pick the right paint sheen? Well, selecting the ideal sheen or gloss level for any paint project, whether it be interior or exterior, involves both aesthetic and practical considerations. What does this mean? Well, it means that aesthetically you may prefer one sheen or gloss over another, as different sheens create different visual interest, particularly indoors. As far as practicality goes, the right sheen or gloss can help extend the life of the paint job, whether on an interior or exterior application, and certain rooms or areas will require a certain level of durability or washability to make them tolerable.

Paint Tips

paintchoice19148508.jpg

  1. Estimate
The first thing you want to do is estimate the amount of materials needed for a particular paint project. To do this, all that is needed is the square footage of the surface that is going to be painted. Your big tip here is to not worry about deducting for windows, doors, etc., By figuring them in you will give yourself room for left over paint for touchup. If the surface is less than one foot wide it is usually figured in linear feet and converted to square feet.

  2. Testing Painted Surfaces
You can avoid paint failures by knowing what paint type you are painting over, and using the proper precautions and preparations. To see what kind of paint was previously used on that surface, you should rub the surface with rubbing alcohol. Latex base paints will dissolve. Alkyd base paints will not.

  3. Textured Ceilings
Some textured ceilings are very difficult to paint. The biggest reason is because the texture is applied over surfaces that have no primer. Because the texture is a water based mixture, painting it with a latex paint will reactivate it, and if not painted correctly will cause it to fall off. Textured ceilings can be painted, but you should use a brush, roller, or sprayer when applying acrylic latex or alkyd base paints.
Calvert Painting is another way to paint a textured ceiling. The theory is that when you apply the alkyd base flat paint, it will soak through the texture and into the underlying surface, bonding the two together and not reactivating it like a latex base paint will. When rolling the paint on the ceiling, roll from one end of the ceiling to the other without stopping. Rolling back over wet texture (with a latex based paint) will pull it off. Wait 24 hours if a second coat is necessary.

  4. Water Stains on Textured Ceilings
Before trying to paint over a brown water stain on a textured ceiling that has never been painted, try this ... Take some straight bleach and put it in a spray bottle. Then spray the stained area with the bleach and let the area dry over night. Depending on the severity of the stain, more than one application may be required. Many times this will take a water stain out of a textured ceiling. If not, be sure to prime the stain with a stain blocking primer before painting.

  5. Tools
Paint with the right tools for the best results. When using brushes, use natural bristle for alkyd or oil based paints and a combination nylon/polyester for latex paints. The combination nylon/polyester last longer than 100% nylon and give a good finish.

Getting a Room Ready For Paint

trim19148588.jpg
Painting takes more than a brush and a can of paint, it also takes some room preparation. In fact, if you are going to do it yourself, it is especially important to know that surface preparation is the single most important part of any paint project. Why? Well, because it promotes better adhesion of coatings, meaning your paint will look better and last longer.

While there are a hundred reasons for paint failure, probably 95% of them can be traced back to inadequate surface preparation and moisture. Since these are the major reasons paints fail to perform, doesn't it make sense to ensure your paint does perform by spending the time to get the surface ready before applying paint?

Tips for painting kitchen cabinets

cabinents37474726.jpg
So is your kitchen starting to look a little worn or dated? Nothing can brighten it up like a fresh coat of paint. And it's the cheapest way to get that remodeled look without having to go the costly replacement route.

First of all, you need to determine the best kind of paint for your type of cabinets, and what you want that paint to accomplish, not to mention what your budget is. The cheapest and easiest type of paint to apply is latex. It's water washable so you don't have any real clean up issues. It is also nicely washable when dry, as long as you get some gloss in it. The higher the gloss, the more washable it is. It's a bit like putting a layer of thin plastic on your cabinets. Enamel is an oil-based paint that costs more and requires more care when applying since it isn't water washable. However, enamel forms a very solid hard surface when dry and lasts a lot longer.

How to know how much paint to buy

paintbucket31932831.jpg
So you've decided on a paint job, the question is how do you know how much paint to buy?

There are several things to consider when buying paint for your next project. The first is space to cover. If you're covering a wall or a room, it's fairly easy because it's measurable. Most paint experts at a paint store or local home improvement store can tell you how much paint you'll need per coat per so many hundred feet. Additionally, many brands have websites that offer that information as well. That's the easy part, but if you're painting furniture or designs or something that can't be measured by length and width, it's a bit of a different story. You can do some basic measurements, adding for lips and edges that overlap. If worst comes to worst and you simply have no idea, try taking a picture and taking that picture to the paint store along with a description like "the chair is as high as my elbow and as wide as my arms and looks like this" and hand them the picture. If nothing else, they'll be amused and you'll have made someone's day, but hopefully they're used to this sort of thing and can give you a good guestimate on how much paint you'll need.

Choosing paint sheen

paintchoice19148476.jpg
When you are remodeling or building your house and you aren't sure what to paint it, then here are some suggestions. You may have the colors that you want, but do you know what sheen would work best? Many people are amazed with all the different colors and sheens that are available today. Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming when you are trying to choose the right ones. Here are some tips in choosing paint sheens that will be right for your home project.

What is paint sheen?
The sheen, or gloss level of a paint which is either oil or water based, is the degree to which the coated surface reflects light. The more resin or binder that is in the paint, then the higher the sheen is. The smoother the finish, the more durable the surface coat. The higher the pigment levels in the paint and the coarser the pigment granules, the duller, rougher, and less resilient the finish is. One of the most important factors in picking your paint line is picking the right sheen.

Painting can be very easy and you can make different details with paint. It is most cost efficient then wallpaper. There are many different types of paint that you will need to look at and decide what color you want. You will also need to choose a paint sheen.

The sheen of any paint is the shine or gloss it will have on your walls. Here are the different types of paint sheens to choose from and some tips of where to use them that may help you choose.

  • Flat paint has no shine at all and seems to have a chalky appearance when painted onto your walls. The most common uses for flat paint are your ceilings or walls. The advantage of flat paint is that it helps hide the appearance of flaws that you may have on the walls or ceilings. Such as drywall tape lines, dips and bulges. Ceilings are where flaws can be easily noticed. Flat paint is not very washable and tends to trap dirt. If you use flat paint on your ceilings then this would not be a problem. Scrubbing flat paint can give it a slight sheen. This can make it stand out from surrounding areas. Flat paint is the easiest to touch-up though because there is no sheen to highlight the new paint.
