Permits needed for bathroom remodeling

When you remodel you often change a lot of things. Sometimes when you demolish walls and move fixtures around you have to have permission to do the remodel, even though it is your home. You sometimes do have to get a permit to do certain projects, but how do you know if you really do need one?

Getting a permit from your city is important. The permits make sure that what you are doing is up to the safety codes and guidelines that are set by builders to ensure no one gets hurt or the building doesn't crumble. The city can make you reverse the changes if your remodel isn't up to code.

There are several different permits you might need. If you are doing an electrical remodel, like adding or switching outlets, you might need to get a specific permit from the city or have a licensed electrician actually do the job for you.

Doing remodels yourself is great but it can be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. When in doubt, hire someone to do the job for you or have a friend show exactly what to do. It's better to pay a little more now than to have your home burn down or get fairly destroyed from not having proper electrical work.

You might need a permit ensuring that your demolition won't cause your home or apartment to fall down. Breaking down the wrong wall can destroy the most expensive thing you own, your home. So make sure you check with your city to be extra sure that your remodel won't hurt your investment.

If you are adding a new tub, shower or sink you will probably need a permit. There are certain rules and codes you have to follow when adding plumbing so again check with your city to see if what you are doing needs a permit or if there are certain guidelines you have to follow.

If you hired a contractor to do the job, then they will probably take care of the permits and licenses to remodel your bathroom. They usually will do it as part of their job, but double check with them.

When you are planning your remodel, make sure that you are looking at safety inspection guidelines. This can help save you time and money making sure that you are spending your efforts on something that will pass inspection. You can get a book from the library on building safety codes and guides. You can also buy them from a bookstore. If you can talk with a contractor or safety inspector to make sure that your specific plans are ok. They are experts and so they will be the best ones to ask about your changes.

If you are unsure if you need a permit or not just check with your city. It can save you from having to remodel your bathroom again or from doing a lot of damage to your home. Every city and state has a slightly different set of rules, so make sure you check to see every time you renovate you bathroom. Rules change from time to time too. It is always best to double check even if you are mostly sure you don't need one.
