Planning Your New Kitchen

So you've decided to remodel your kitchen. Feeling intimidated? You're not alone. Planning your new kitchen doesn't have to be stressful!

Are you ready to plan your new kitchen? Maybe you've been saving up for this for years. Maybe you've had a recent financial windfall. Maybe you're just looking for something to brighten up your home. Whatever the reason, you've decided it's time for a new kitchen! But where should you start planning?

Decide

The first thing you want to do when planning your new kitchen is get an idea of what you want it to be. Do you want it bright and summery? Clean and cozy? Modern? Classic? Some combination of the above? It isn't necessary to have an exact design in mind at this point, but know the basics of what you are looking for. Look at the style of the rest of your home, and plan your kitchen to match that.

Browse

In the planning stages for your new kitchen it's a good idea to browse around home improvement stores, looking at cabinets, sinks, and counter tops. Talk to employees and get their recommendations, but don't be talked into something that you're not sure about! What kind of furniture would you like in your kitchen? Would you like an island? Look through magazines and even on television for styles and designs you like. Decide whether you want wood floors or linoleum, what kind of cupboards you would like, what colors of paint would go best on the walls. Don't forget to take your kitchen windows into account as well, since natural light can make a huge difference in what kinds of colors suit your walls. Pick and choose what you want to see in your new kitchen, and write it down. It's good to have a few different options and be a little bit flexible in the beginning, and listen to your contractor's ideas.

Get Help!

Find a contractor. This is the part where money comes into play. But the news isn't all bad. While it's a sad but true fact that kitchen remodeling can sometimes be a bit pricier than one would hope, it is actually one of the least expensive rooms to remodel in the home. Once you have an idea of what you want, you should try to find some estimates of the cost of your new kitchen. A good place to find these estimates without having to put up with pushy salesmen is online. It's important to find a trustworthy contractor. You can look in the phone book, you can look online, or ask any of your friends who have had work done on their home. You can also call professional agencies and independent workers. Shop around for the best price, but remember that quality is important too.

Remember, it's Your Kitchen!

Lastly, it is important to keep your chin up through the remodeling process. Some days you may want to change your mind, or perhaps you don't like your contractor's approach. Sometimes watching the destruction of your old kitchen will be stressful. But just remember that even though the process can be a long one, usually eight to twelve weeks, when it's finished you will have a brand new, sparkling kitchen of entirely your own design.

You have now officially begun on your way to your brand new kitchen! There are more decisions ahead, such as what to keep from your old kitchen, what kinds of appliances you'd like to purchase, and what sort of lighting to choose. The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the home, and once you have yours fully personalized just think how much better you will be able to not only prepare food, but eat, entertain, work, and do pretty much whatever you want! Remember that it's your choice, and the room you create will be a pleasure for years to come.
