Potential problems when remodeling a house, and how to avoid them (i.e. mold, etc.)
Remodeling a house is a great way to make an older house into a newer house or to increase the value of a home. But remodeling a house is a big job, and there are possible problems that can arise that may not be included in the project plans. This article discusses some of these potential problems that can come when a person is remodeling a house, and how to avoid them.
Mold
When a person is tearing down walls, finishing a basement, or ripping up carpet, it is possible that they could come in contact with mold. This is especially true if there has been any problem with water or excessive moisture in the house. Mold can be very dangerous and people need to be very careful when doing a home remodel.
If, during a remodel, a leak or spill occurs, a person should make sure to allow the area to thoroughly dry. This can take up to 24 to 48 hours. Keeping things dry is the best way to prevent the growth of mold. Also, if someone finds mold during a remodel, they should clean off the mold using water and detergent and then allow the area to completely dry. If mold has gotten into carpet or other types of absorbent material, they need to be replaced.
Asbestos
Asbestos is a dangerous substance. Though it is no longer used in building homes and other buildings, older houses may contain asbestos. If left alone, asbestos is not known to be hazardous. But if it is breathed in at high levels, it is known to cause asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. So even though a person has had asbestos in their home for years, it will likely not be harmful until they remodeling their home and saw, scrape, sand, or crumble the asbestos.
Asbestos can be found in insulation blankets that may over furnace ducts, or boilers. It can be on the back of vinyl sheet flooring or decorative walls. Asbestos may even be in textured paints and other house insulation.
For a person to stay safe when dealing with asbestos during their home remodel, they should not sand, drill, or disturb the asbestos. It is best to let a professional handle the removal of the asbestos. Also, it is important not to track the asbestos throughout the house. And large areas that may contain asbestos should be cleaned professionally.
Dust
Many times during a remodel, a potential problem is dust. It is best to avoid dust when possible, but there are times when dust cannot be avoided. In those cases, it is important for the dust to be contained. Also, a person can use work practices that will cause less dust. They can spray a little water on an area before they begin to scrap or sand it.
Pollutants and odors
During remodels there are many different products and chemicals that can be used. And while these chemicals and products are being used the odors and other pollutants they release can be harmful to those living and working in the house. Workers and those who have to be in the area of the home getting remodeled should wear masks and or gloves and other protective clothing to ensure their safety when being around the chemicals.
Children and other people, who do not need to be near the remodeling, should stay away from the chemicals. It is also important that there is proper ventilation in the remodeling area. And if it is possible, sealers and paints should be applied to materials outside and then allowed to dry before they are brought inside the house.
Causes and corrections
Most importantly during a remodel, is that when a problem is noticed, a person should pinpoint the cause of the problem and then correct the cause. For instance, if a person is remodeling their floor because they have noticed some of the tiles have come up they should first look at the cause, instead of just automatically replacing the tiles. A problem is likely to keep occurring if the cause is not affected in the remodel.
