Questions to ask when checking references of a contractor
So many things go into building or remodeling a house. You have to get what things you want to change and then get bids from different contractors so that you can figure out how much it is going to cost you. But not only do you have to get bids from contractors you also need to make sure that they are legitimate and they have good references. Here are some suggestions on questions to ask when checking references of a contractor.
The first suggestion is to make sure you ask each reference has good things to say about the contractor. There might be one that has something bad to say about a contractor because not everyone can be pleased. But you want to make sure that for the most part that you get good reviews on their craftsmanship and that they were satisfied with the job done.
The second suggestion is to make sure that you ask how the contractors bid compared to the final invoice. Some contractors try to bid low so that they will get the job and then you will find when you get the final invoice that the price is a lot higher then the original bid. You will also want to make sure that you ask different references if they noticed if the contractor's bids came in higher or lower then a lot of other contractors.
The third suggestion is to make sure that you ask each reference what type of work the contractor did for them. Some contractors might be finishing a bathroom while the same contractor might have built a whole house for some one else. You want to make sure that the references you are talking to have the same type of work done that you want the contractor to do for you.
The fourth suggestion is to ask how long it took the contractor to do the work. You want to make sure that you hire a contractor that can keep a schedule pretty close to what he tells you at first. There are some contractors that will tell some one that they can have their house done in a certain amount of time but come to find out in the end it take the contractor twice as long and you might end up having to pay extension fees and everything else if you have a loan. So make sure that you ask how long each project took for different people.
The fifth suggestion is to make sure that you find out what type of materials they use. You want to make sure that you are paying a good price for good quality. You don't want to pay a higher cost for cheaper quality of materials.
The sixth suggestion is to make sure to find out if the contractors have a warranty and if their references have had any problems with the contractor sticking to the warranty. You want to make sure that you hirer a contractor that will stick by his work and will be willing to fix any problems that you might have.
These are some of the suggestions that you can ask different references. You will want to make sure that if you have any concerns about anything that you are having a contractor do that you do some research and make sure that the contractor is some one that you want to hire and work with. You don't want to pay some one to do a job and end up finding out that you are paying some one to do a job that isn't getting done.
