Working with the weather, not fighting it, during a remodel or home building project

There are many things that you will not be able to predict when you are working on a home remodel or a home building project. While many people first turn their thoughts to unreliable contractor time tables, few remember the factors of the weather and how they can drastically affect the timeline of a project. Bad weather can affect any home improvement project, no matter how much of the exterior of the house is being worked on.

When working with the weather it is important not to fight what you cannot control. If the weather hinders your remodel or home building project, simply remember to do something else when the weather doesn't allow you to work. Timelines become most strained when builders and contractors stop all work because one item in the sequence of building cannot be completed due to the weather. Simply encourage them to move on to a different project.

If you have to do things outside, find ways to keep your work area covered. Tarps and large tents may be extra costs, but the cost for this outdoor covering is likely to be much less than the cost of postponing finishing dates and paying for a project to go over schedule. Canopies are also a great way to keep your work out of the rain. Remember to use all of the outdoor space to its fullest. If you have a garage, consider renting a storage unit and moving the larger items in that garage elsewhere so that the covered space can be used by workers when the weather gets bad.

The best time of year to remodel your home

One of the most troubling questions for homeowners looking to remodel their homes is when they should do their remodeling. Generally speaking, the best time of year to remodel your home is the summertime. If you remodel your home during the summer, you can spend a lot more time outdoors with your family and you won't be as inconvenienced by a full kitchen remodel, for example. Instead, you can just barbeque outside. Also, if you remodel during the summer, then you can leave windows and doors open so that paint can dry more quickly and so that you can get rid of fumes faster.

However, there are downsides to remodeling your home during the summer. The summertime is when most people remodel their homes, so you will probably have to wait for different subcontractors such as plumbers and cabinet makers, since they are also most busy during the summer. If you can wait, then you might want to consider having your remodeling done in the fall or the late spring so that you can avoid the huge rush that occurs during the summer.

It is also popular to paint only the upper or only the lower portion of a wall or to paint only the molding and trim.
Painting a wall is cheap. Even if you have to buy all the equipment (paint pans, rollers, brushes, tape, and paint), you will probably not spend $100 on your update.
