Remodeling and Construction Safety

Remodeling a home can pose some serious health and safety risks. Remodeling and construction safety is extremely important and should be your number one consideration when starting a remodel. Here are some things to consider and to keep in mind when you take on a remodeling project.

Keeping children safe
If you're planning to do any type of remodeling and you have children around or in your home you need to make sure that they are safe during the process. Construction sites to young children are extremely attractive. Large piles of dirt with "toy" tractors; what could be more fun to young children? If there is a large amount of demolition going on make sure the areas of demolition are taped off and children know exactly where they can and cannot go. Contractors are not hired to be babysitters for your children, but they do need to know how many children are around the house so that they are aware. Make sure that contractors know the ages of children as that will also give them a heads up on whether or not any of them are "mischief" prone.

A consideration for full time working parents with young children is to have them taken to a friend's house until the work can be finished, or just to have them away from the house. Don't ever leave your children alone at a remodel or construction site even for five minutes to run an errand. A construction site is no place for a child to be playing.

Hazardous Materials

Before starting any remodeling or construction project you should go through your house or whatever it is you're remodeling and find any potentially toxic materials. If you are doing any sort of demolition then you will want to be aware of lead paint, asbestos, and mold. These three are the major toxins found in home demo's and can be extremely harmful to anyone they come in contact with. Make sure that the crews are trained and aware of what might be in the building that is being remodeled. You will also want to make sure that professionals are trained to take the appropriate steps to keep the hazards from contaminating your living space.

Make sure that you, as well as your builders are aware of certain building materials that can emit organic compounds. Adhesives, paints, and varnishes are just a few of the materials that can be harmful to anyone. It's also a good idea to talk with your contractor to make sure you are on the same page about avoiding pollutants and harmful substances

Keep the Job site clean
One of the best ways to keep your job site from being contaminated with pollutants and harmful chemicals is to keep it clean and picked up daily. If harmful substances aren't left out to spill and things are picked up around the site then you are less likely to have any accidents.

First Aid
With every responsible home remodel or construction job you should always have an on-site first aid kit that has bandages and other first aid supplies in case an accident occurs.

Remodeling and construction safety should always be your first concern when building or remodeling. You never want to put others or yourself at risk. If you are unsure about anything, don't hesitate to call in a professional for help.
